Mt Saint Helens Back Country Winter ski Circumnavigation

  • Mar 29, 2013 · 5:00 AM

Just wanted to let you know we are attempting the circumnavigation of Mt. St. Helens this weekend with this great weather window.

Starting at Cougar Snowpark, will be traveling clockwise to the west then north, then east and back south again, 36 miles in all, around 4000 ft elevation, hopefully before Monday evening. (4/1/13)

You can follow our adventure with the link below:

Have a Easter great weekend.

This strenuous backpack explores the wonderful Mt St Helen’s This 4-day, 40-mile loop around Mount St. Helens links old-growth forests to alpine lakes and meadows and offers a front-row look at the leftovers of this volcano's famous eruption on May 18, 1980. A winter circuit of Mount St. Helens is one of the most spectacular backcountry skiing in the Northwest. The treeless plains offer broad vistas, including steam rising out of the crater, rocks falling from the precipitous slopes, the barren Mount Margaret ridge, eerie Spirit Lake and the 150-foot Loowit Falls as it plunges from the breach in the crater.

Too tough for me, today. Looking forward to making these types of trips this next autumn. Need Summer for conditioning/training.

Not "hardcore" but this sounds awesome! I can do any strenuous hike and/or trail skiing but new to overnights and don't telemark. Do you do a "softcore" version?

Hi Melina, Am toying with a soft, or at least plyable-core, but this trip is just for us badasses!
