Tom McCall Preserve plus Wahclella Falls option

The forecast for Easter Sunday in the east Gorge is a spectacular 70 degrees and clear. The wildflowers are out in abundance with more coming out every day.

I offered this trip on March 17. A number of people signed up for it, but by time to leave, no one showed at Gateway. Two people made the trip on their own w/o stopping at Gateway and gave a glowing report. This time I'm offering it closer to leaving date in hopes that those of you who sign up will really come.

This is an exploratory trip for your leader as I did it too long ago to remember. It's just 3.4 miles RT w/ 1100' elevation gain. We'll also check out some of the lower McCall Preserve plateau, so add another .6 mi. Expect balsamroot, buttercup, Columbia desert parsley and other lomatiums like salt & pepper, lupine, phlox, yellow bells and more.

These are interpretive trips, so bring some natural or cultural history to share with the group. If full, please sign up on the waiting list and show up if this kind of trip really interests you. Unfortunately, there are always no-shows!

See Bill Sullivan's description here:
Once you read this, there's no reason not to come with my requested facts to share as Bill has already done some of your research for you.

Since this is such a short trip, I'd like to combine it with another short trip for those wanting more. Wahclella Falls is easiest to reach from the east, so, let's do this 1.8 mi RT on the way back for a total hiking mileage of about 5.8 mi. See for a description of Wahclella.

Angela and I both added to our tally sheet for the FOCG Wildflower Frenzy challenge. We hit TMP just right for the grass widows, spring beauty and Columbia desert parsley and lots more besides. A reasonable number of balsam root were out. Likewise for the Columbia kittentails at Wahclella. The trips into both places seemed far more meditative and perhaps more instructive for both of us--with few of the other social distractions. The company and the weather were GREAT!

Angela and I just agreed to meet in Lloyd Center at 16th & Multnomah--near the theater--at 8 AM. We won't be stopping at Gateway unless we hear from you via phone tonight:[masked]-7858. If you plan to show at Lloyd Center--or Gateway for that matter--please sign up.
