Mt. Hood - Yocum Ridge (16 miles; 4,000' gain; 6,200' peak)

This is an all day ramble to alpine meadows on the west side of Mt. Hood at the head of the Sandy River. The trail is long but the rewards are great: walk through Mt. Hood's last eruption and see 200-year old snags; enjoy beautiful Ramona Falls; wonder at great old 500 year old noble firs and mountain hemlock; and enjoy a view of Mt. Hood from the head of the Sandy River so beautiful it will bring tears to your eyes; a nap in the flower-filled alpine meadow is likely. I've hiked over 100 trails locally, and this is my #1 favorite day trip hike from Portland. Only something this wonderful would be worth all the work. Mitigating the distance is the soft, even, well-graded, well-maintained trail that lacks up-and-down roller-coastering: we'll hike straight up then come straight down.

Pace averages 1.5 mi/hr, including lots of breaks. Feel free to stop and photograph flowers, watch for birds, or track elk and coyote.

Brewpub to follow. Meet at 6:30 AM, back around 9:00 PM (Sunrise: 6:23 AM Sunset: 8:02 PM)

Sooo bummed to miss this! Headed to the airport instead. Prepping for last minute business trip caused to me ignore social obligations - like cancelling my RSVUP. Sorry. Hope it didn't cause any issues.

Coming down with a cold - think I'll skip this one. :-( Sorry for late notice. Have fun - looks like a great hike!

Thank you for signing up for Saturday's Sierra Club hike to Ramona Falls and Yocum Ridge on Mt. Hood - looks like we'll get perfect summer weather! Temperatures are forecast to be in the 50s at 10:00 AM at the trailhead, and top out in the mid 60s at the summit. It will be partly sunny. Bring some sun screen. Please let me know on Meetup before 5:30 AM Saturday if you decide not to attend. Any no-shows who don't let me know prior to 6:30 AM will be marked as such in Meetup. Meet me on the sidewalk on NE 99th Street, outside in front of the parking garage. Look for my RED 1994 Toyota Corolla Wagon. I am a thin 5' 9" man with black hair and a mustache. We'll carpool from there. It's a 1 hour 15 minute hour drive to the trailhead, about 50 miles each way. My rough estimate on return to Gateway is 9:00 PM, but it will depend on who is there and what we see.

Looking forward to being on the trail with you!
