Lookout Mountain via Fret Creek/Oval Lake

Date: Saturday, Sept. 14 8:00 a.m.

Distance: 8 miles

Elevation Gain: 2000 feet

Peak Elevation: 6525 feet

Difficulty Level: Probably Moderate to Difficult (see below)

Dogs: No

$$: Requested 2 dollar donation, plus carpool money 10 cents/mile

Full disclosure -- I've never actually taken this trail, so I can't vouch for anything, including its steepness or difficulty. But I hear it is quite nice; the description certainly makes it sound that way. And what is that description? Woods, creeks, a lake, a rock outcrop on a vertiginous crag, and finally a mountaintop viewpoint encompassing eight volcanos with a view of Mt Hood that is "hard to beat." And hey, the window for hiking at 6500 feet this year is closing pretty fast, so, y'know ...

We will meet at 8:00 at the Gateway Park and Ride. Please be on time and prepared to leave. Bring plenty of water (that window may be closing, but the forcast says pretty warm this weekend), enough food, appropriate footwear and clothing, sunscreen, 10 essentials, etc. If you have any questions about what to bring or about this hike (but see above), contact me by email or at[masked], cell[masked]-7908.

Good hike and great view of Mt. Hood - too hazy for good view of other peaks in Cascade chain.

The Northeast corner of the parking garage (the corner closest to the Fred Meyer) is traditional, and who am I to argue with tradition? There will most likely be several groups milling around in that area, so you can't miss it. As for milage, I'm not sure if that 9.2 is the same route (there are many paths to Lookout Mt). Sullivan has 7.4 round trip, but I was also planning on the .3 side trip to Palisade Point, for a total of 8.

Where exactly at Gateway Park and Ride should we meet? For Tom's hikes a few years back, we've met beside the parking structure. Is that the spot?

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
