Coal Exports Rally & Scoping Hearing

BUS & CARPOOLS: From Portland: Leaving from east end of Holladay Park (NE 13th & Holladay) near Lloyd Center at noon, 3 PM AND 5:30 PM. Look for "NO COAL EXPORT" signs. THIS IS A CHANGE from the flier you may have gotten in the mail. We will NOT be meeting at the Sierra Club office.

This hearing is to address Millennium Bulk Terminal's proposal to send 44 million tons of coal per year through the Gorge, southwest Washington, and Portland en route to Longview. That's up to 16 coal trains per day cutting through our communities, polluting our air with diesel and coal dust, clogging our railroads and blocking access to neighborhoods.

This public Environmental Impact Statement Scoping hearing is on Wednesday October 9th at the Clark County Fairgrounds Event Center in Ridgefield, WA, from 1 to 8 pm. Our Power Past Coal rally will be at 4 pm (also inside the Event Center), the Army Corps of Engineers' hearing will run from 1-4 pm and the Washington Department of Ecology hearing will run form 5- 8 pm.

This hearing is our chance to demand a scope for the Longview coal export study that includes impacts to our communities. Communities themselves don't have the resources to study the health, safety, economic, and environmental risks of coal exports -- we depend on the Department of Ecology to do this. We demanded a broad scope of review for the Cherry Point/Bellingham terminal last year, and it worked! Now, it's time to do the same for the Longview coal proposal.

It is critical that decision-makers hear from you -- as a business owner, a health professional, or an elected leaders -- about all of your concerns.

Two minute testimony is accepted at the hearing, and we will have a system to get raffle tickets to individuals who wish to testify.

Please let LAURA STEVENS know if you are able to testify at the hearing on October 9th. You can email Laura at [masked] or call at[masked] x 305.

If you are unable to testify in person, you can still submit your comment by emailing it to: [masked].

I met the Noon carpoolers and was one of the first to testify. Then I went over to our hospitality room, got a red t-shirt and had some tea and food that I brought. There is free wi-fi here, so bring your laptop.

If I join the 12 pm carpool to the hearing, what time will I get a ride back to Portland? I have to be here by 6 pm.

I believe there will be carpools or vans coming back to Portland on a regular basis every hour. The rally is at 4 PM and you will surely be able to get a ride back by then. I am wanting to be back by then myself.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
