We live in uncertain and challenging times..."

So begins "The Oil Journey," a brief presentation on energy, the economy, and the future.

"The Oil Journey" explores, in plain English, how fossil fuels have driven incredible economic growth, social progress, and environmental damage over the last 100 years, and what recent changes in energy production and consumption may mean for us over the next 100 years. Developed by non-partisan think tank Post Carbon Institute, "The Oil Journey" cuts through the rhetoric and politics on these issues for an honest look at the challenges our society now faces.

Please join us for what w hope will be an interesting, thought-provoking presentation, followed by group discussion

Oregon Chapter High Desert Committee Outing: Steens Mountain Base Camp

When: August 30, 2012 to September 3, 2012

Where: Steens Mountainn

Steens Mountain, a large fault-block mountain in southeastern Oregon, is one of the wildest and most remote lands left in Oregon. Join us over Labor Day Weekend and explore its summit and canyons from the Steens Mountain North Loop road. The views from Kiger Gorge, East Rim, Big Indian Gorge, Wildhorse and Little Blitzen Gorge overlooks are not to be missed! We will have a base camp and do moderate to strenuous day hikes. Depending on conditions, our base camp will either be a dispersed campsite or an established one (where fees will apply).

To register contact Rustica Carlos: [address removed] or (503)[masked]

For details, go to our outings web site at http://www.outingsnorthwest.org

General Outings Information: All participants on Sierra Club outings are required to sign a standard liability waiver.

If you would like to read the liability waiver before you choose to participate on an outing, contact the Outings department at (415)[masked] for a printed version.

You don’t have to be a member to participate!

Arrive with adequate food, water and clothing. If in doubt about your ability to complete a hike, please consult with the leader before the trip.

Field guides, snacks to share and humor are welcome.

Please leave your pet at home unless otherwise specified or with prior approval from the leader. Entertainment devices are discouraged. Firearms are prohibited.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Most day trips require no advance reservations unless “reservations required” or “group size limited” is indicated.

Participants are encouraged to contribute a small donation for the outing. These optional donations help the Group Outings Program to offer professional leaders’ training courses, carbon offset contributions, and other outings activities to strengthen and diversify Columbia Group outings.

Carpooling is encouraged. Riders traditionally share expenses with drivers depending on vehicle and number of riders.

See www.trimet.org to find out how to get to the carpool location via mass transit.

<!--[if !supportLists]-->3.)   <!--[endif]-->Volunteer Needs:

Contact Jeff Fryer at [address removed] if interested in volunteering.

Volunteers needed for Southwest Portland Sunday Parkways July 22

Shifts:
10am-1pm
1pm-4pm
*If you are available for less than a whole shift, but want to help, please let me know - you would still be more than welcome!!

We are going to be providing water to refill the water bottles of riders along the bike route and educating Portlanders about the bottled water issue.  It is one of the most fun events that we do all year with lots of opportunity to soak in the sun, interact with Portlanders, meet Columbia Group members and make a HUGE DIFFERENCE.  Please just respond to this email if you are interested in helping out with shift preferences and I will get back to you with details for the event!
