Free Cabernet Tasting - The other Cab, Cabernet Franc - Try the original Cab

This is your chance to try the original Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, which is the parent to Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc originates in the Loire Valley, in the Mid-Western part of France.

The grape tends to exhibit lovely bright flavors of Cranberry, Raspberry, Pomegranate and Plum, underpinned by earthy Cedar, Herbal and Green Pepperish notes. In the new world, it can get to full phenological ripeness. New World flavors are lovely full Raspberry, Plum Pomegranate, Chocolate and Cassis with Leather, Pepper and Cedar underneath.

Taste in the pleasant chill of the underground tasting room at Portland Wine Storage. Come and cool down!

In this free tasting we will drink 6 bottles. 2 French Cab Francs from the wonderful 09 vintage and 4 New World Cab Francs.

2008 Rosa Mystica (Owen Roe) Cabernet Franc

92 Pts Wine Spectator
Good medium red. Musky, slightly raw aromas of red berries and pepper. Sweet on entry, then peppery and uncompromising in the middle, with a much more restrained sweetness to its red berry, earth and tobacco flavors. Moderately dense but not at all thick-and quite light on its feet. Finishes with a serious dusting of fine tannins. I like this style. 90 pts Stephen Tanzer

2010 Sineann Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Franc

with a nose of campfire, flowers, raspberry, cassis and cloves... the wine is intense but lighter than many Rosback wines, driven by acidity and with the green note you might expect with the varietal... the flavors are rich but balanced, with notes of red currant, cherry, spices, leather and tobacco...

2009 Chinon Catherine & Pierre Breton

A beautiful ruby colour, plenty of violets on the nose and is lush, tender and silky on the palate with black cherry, currant and pomegranate with earthy notes, nice herbaceousness and minerality bringing up the rear of this natural wine. --Grape Store

2009 Les Villaises Samur Champigny

Warm, rustic, berry nose. Forward crunchy redcurrant and cherry fruit with a firm structure for now. Promises fruity length and some minerality. - Decanter.com

2008 Walla Walla Vintners CV Cab Franc

this Cabernet Franc brings out the essence of what this grape has to offer. The vintage showcases more classic flavors of the sometimes herbaceous grape, balanced by blue fruit, earth, minerality and cocoa notes. -SeattleMag.Com - Best Washington Reds

2008 Corvidae The Keeper Cab Franc

Last and best is the Corvidae 2007 The Keeper Cabernet Franc this cab franc has real richness, dark fruits and thick, smoky tannins. Paul Gregutt Seattle Times

2008 Sleight of Hand Spellbinder Cab Franc Blend

Pure, rough, unadulterated red fruits. I get much of the Cab Franc expression without the obscuration of oak, and the other varietals add weight and balance. -- Cellar Tracker

There will be a charcuterie and exotic cheese plate there. As I said, the tasting is free, but if you want to tip out a buck or two for the food, that would be greatly appreciated.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
