"I come down to the water to cool my eyes. But everywhere I look I see fire; that which isn't flint is tinder, and the whole world sparks and flames." --Annie Dillard
Welcome to the Portland WHWC! This group hopes to encompass a diverse array of interests and experience levels, whether you are new to hiking or an experienced backcountry traveler. We also aim to give back to the Wilderness community whenever possible via myriad stewardship opportunities and such. Please suggest any ideas you may have for trips and/or volunteer work parties and contact me with questions. By joining this group, you are consenting to a Waiver of Liability between yourself and the organizers, as is typical for most outdoor meetups.
In our "Pages" section of the Meetup (located in the tabs below the group banner), you will see a Table of Contents with various sections. Please take the time to fully read all of this as you will be expected to come to events prepared to incorporate what you see here. This will also help make the trips much more enjoyable for you : )
The Pacific Northwest is too beautiful to not get out and explore all that it has to offer, no matter the season. Luckily, there are myriad options for adventure: hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, car camping, wildlife-treks, wildflower hikes, et al. If you have an idea for a meetup, please feel free to suggest it. There are tons of amazing places we can go for day trip hikes, as well backpacking/car camping trips.
There are quite a few outdoor-exploration groups in the Portland area, as I'm sure many of you know, and I've noticed that a lot of the hikes I've done--especially backpacking and car camping trips--have had a much higher ratio of men to women. I love hiking/camping with my male friends, but I'd also like to have an opportunity to spend more time with other women who have a penchant for nature and adventure. Also, as a photography enthusiast, I have noticed a lack of photography-oriented wilderness opportunities. While we plan on having plenty of "regular" hikes/backpacks in this group, I also want to post photography-centered events.
This group is suitable for hikers of all levels as each hike and backpacking/camping trip will include a detailed description and will indicate whether the trip is "easy", "moderate", or "difficult". Please feel free to email me with any questions; I look forward to some exciting and fun adventures!
