Writing Workshop

Would you like to submit your writing to be reviewed by some of your peers? Here’s how:

  • format your work with a minimum 1.5 line spacing and a minimum 11 point font to be easily readable to your reviewers and to allow them room for comments between the lines.
  • make sure your work, when formatted as above, is about 20-ish pages or less in length.
  • add the date of the workshop you’re submitting for in the title of your file prior to uploading it (for example ‘My Great American Novel - Chapter 1 (3/7/13).doc’).
  • on the Portland Aspiring Writers Group meetup home page, click the More button and then select Files from the dropdown menu. At the top of this page below the word Files is a link that says Add a File. Click this and follow the prompts to upload your work. Add a description if you’d like, especially if the content may be challenging.
  • that’s it!
  • if you have any questions/concerns or you’d like permission to bend the rules a bit, contact the workshop’s host prior to the meetup.

We’ll workshop a maximum of four (4) pieces of writing, one from each of the first four attendees to post their work as outlined above. I’d like to suggest anyone submitting work commit straightaway to being at the workshop, barring emergencies or unforeseen circumstances of course.

If you're coming as a reviewer it would be ideal for you to read, write down and comment on the work being submitted in advance, however if you can't do this beforehand please feel free to come anyway and join the conversation about each writer's work while it's in progress. As long as a few people can do the pre-workshop reviewing this should provide enough stimulation to get things started. You also do not have to stay for the stated duration of the workshop. This is a ballpark estimate and may vary based on the submissions.

As a final note, the workshop’s host will delete submitted files about one week after the workshop they’ve been submitted for has been concluded if the person submitting the work has not already done so. This is to keep the Files area clean. The workshop’s host and Portland Aspiring Writers Group assume no responsibility for the loss of your work, so please don’t post original files that you haven’t backed up somehow.

Good luck everyone. I look forward to seeing the submissions!

Charles, there's still room for one more, so go for it! Do you need help submitting your piece?

I pulled a story from the eclectic oven - "Keeper of the Tusk." Editing it for final eBook. I'd like to submit a few chapters tomorrow--if there is room for our May 2nd workshop. If not, that's OK--I'll wait for next meet up. Let me know, please.

    Thanks,

i gave it 4 stars because everyone is so kind and caring; but it is a difficult venue because of other sounds and when people speak over each other it makes it really challenging to hear

Looks like I will have to miss this meeting, and apologize since my Tobin Tree chapter is on the list to be reviewed. If you have read it and are willing to give you comments/copy to Scott, he has offered to keep them for me. I appreciate your time in reading, and will benefit from your responses. Many thanks.

    Rita,
I haven't read your work yet (will do this weekend), but could you post your original version if you have the time? I'd like to be able to compare the two side-by-side.

    Thanks!

Well, everyone, it seems like a record but we seem to be chock-a-block full of submissions for this one! And we have five to boot. Susanne has suggested hers will be for a waiting list, but given that she's submitted to every workshop thusfar, how does everyone feel about extending the velvet rope and letting Susanne's in? Certainly I'm always willing to read Susanne's work and I always like a long story - 43 pages in this case (but formatted with spacing, etc.). Is anyone/everyone else out there willing to read one more?

I'm happy to add Susanne's to the readings.

Scott, I haven't received any of the authors' writing inputs to be discussed. I'm assuming you can email the items to be discussed to me. I'd like to submit a chapter of my work to be discussed by the other members in the group at the April 4th meeting. How do I get the chapter to you for dissemination>

Scott, I find the entire meetup format somewhat convoluted. I don't see where to access your instructions. So, I'd rather communicate with you directly via email. Mine is [masked]. Please send your instructions on how to access the works of others in our group to my email addrss. In like manner, I will forward to your email address what I'd like to have discussed by the group. You can enter it into the meetup context. Thanks, Bob

I sent an email to you. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I see you uploaded a file. Great!

i have revised the piece I submitted using the critiques received and will resubmit this as I am now looking to polish it for submission somewhere. I will be looking for critique toward a higher level of writing in order to ready it for publication. Thanks. Looking forward to our next gathering. Enjoy these fine pre-spring days.

Alright! A challenger has come forward! I detect a bead of sweat on Susanne's brow but she's got quite a lead and she's tough to boot. As for myself, I guess I better get cracking on a second draft of Adrift since I want to get it published too. Perhaps we should make that a goal - see who in the group can be first to publish something in being motivated partially as a result of the group's activities. Hmm...

Hey everyone, just last week we had our biggest and - in my opinion - most vibrant writing workshop yet! It was great seeing so many people and some new faces, including someone submitting work for the very first time! We still have over three weeks until the next one, but once again I'll begin my cyber arm-twisting now. If you'd like to submit work, please feel free to do so following the suggestions in the meetup details above. If you have a longer work, consider submitting a chapter.

And for you competitive folks out there, Susanne is far and away the submitting champion so far but don't let that stop you from trying to take her crown! :)
