Sudden Writing!

Wanting to write but lacking ideas? Are you experiencing writer’s block and just need something to get you jumpstarted again? Do you like a challenge, the thrill of writing spontaneously? If so, this meetup is for you.

Here’s how it will work:

  • Once the meetup is underway, the host will have someone choose a prompt blindly from several prompts being offered. This prompt will be read aloud to the group and placed somewhere within easy reach for reference.
  • Participants will then write as directed or suggested by the prompt for one hour.
  • Once the hour is up, interested participants may read their work if they’d like to. This is completely voluntary, however you may experience a little gentle peer pressure. :)

That’s it! From there you can do with it what you will: file it away for later, develop it into a full-blown story, take it in a direction not suggested by the prompt, and of course maybe submit it to one of the writing workshops (hint, hint!).

Curious about what the prompts might be? I’ve included the one from our first Sudden Writing meetup below, although the format of each prompt may vary in its direction.

Prompt: You return to your hometown after more than a decade and learn that the house you grew up in has been condemned as the result of a violent murder.

If you have an idea for a prompt, please send it to the host for inclusion in the ‘bag’ of prompts we randomly select from. The host reserves the right to tweak your prompt idea.

One final note:
If you RSVP Yes and then find you can’t attend prior to the meetup, please take the time to change your RSVP to No, or contact the host privately or through the comments section to express your regrets. This is to ensure people who are automatically waitlisted can attend and it helps the host in gathering enough tables and chairs to seat everyone who RSVPed Yes. This meetup occurs in a freely and kindly provided public space that isn’t reserved to us exclusively, so please be respectful of your host, the venue and their other customers who might be looking for a seat by being thoughtful in letting the host know if you can’t attend as you’d hoped to.

Also, please be aware that the host cannot guarantee electrical outlets, or enough of them, will be nearby to where the meetup occurs. Please plan ahead and/or consider ‘kicking it old school’ and bringing a pen and paper to write with, even as a back-up.

I thought today was really great, six of us there, and all six stories departed from the prompt in different directions in very creative ways. I love this event, easily one of my favorite things to do every month, thanks Scott for organizing and all five of you who were there with me who wrote and shared and listened!

I really enjoyed it - it was great to meet some new people and get really energized about writing in different formats.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it. I was only on the waiting list, so I found something else to do and now I'm about 4 hours away! I hope to attend the next one, though. :)

While I'm not Scott, he has always said he would never turn anyone away. My limited experience is that not everyone shows up, and that certainly not everyone wants to read. I would say definitely go, and as to time, I'd say at least 1.5 hours for the meeting up and writing, then the reading portion goes on until everyone who wants to read gets a chance to read. I think last time it was a good 2-2.5 hours or so.

    I hope that helps!

Scott - you mentioned in an earlier note to Donna that she could come even when she was wait listed. Would I be able to sit in on this as well? And if so, how long do these usually go for? (Just trying to figure out my weekend.) Thanks.

Sorry that neither Kevin nor I can make it, but know that we rate your sudden writing exercises are truly worthwhile.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
