Writing Workshop

Would you like to submit your writing to be reviewed by some of your peers? Here’s how:

format your work with a minimum 1.5 line spacing and a minimum 11 point font to be easily readable to your reviewers and to allow them room for comments between the lines.

make sure your work, when formatted as above, is about 20-ish pages or less in length.

add the date of the workshop you’re submitting for in the title of your file prior to uploading it (for example ‘My Great American Novel - Chapter 1 (3/7/13).doc’).

on the Portland Aspiring Writers Group meetup home page, click the More button and then select Files from the dropdown menu. At the top of this page below the word Files is a link that says Add a File. Click this and follow the prompts to upload your work. Add a description if you’d like, especially if the content may be challenging.

that’s it!

if you have any questions/concerns or you’d like permission to bend the rules a bit, contact the workshop’s host prior to the meetup.

We’ll workshop a maximum of four (4) pieces of writing, one from each of the first four attendees to post their work as outlined above. I’d like to suggest anyone submitting work commit straightaway to being at the workshop, barring emergencies or unforeseen circumstances of course.

If you're coming as a reviewer it would be ideal for you to read, write down and comment on the work being submitted in advance, however if you can't do this beforehand please feel free to come anyway and join the conversation about each writer's work while it's in progress. As long as a few people can do the pre-workshop reviewing this should provide enough stimulation to get things started. You also do not have to stay for the stated duration of the workshop. This is a ballpark estimate and may vary based on the submissions.

As a final note, the workshop’s host will delete submitted files about one week after the workshop they’ve been submitted for has been concluded if the person submitting the work has not already done so. This is to keep the Files area clean. The workshop’s host and Portland Aspiring Writers Group assume no responsibility for the loss of your work, so please don’t post original files that you haven’t backed up somehow.

Good luck everyone. I look forward to seeing the submissions!

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend on the new date, but I've sent my feedback to everyone, so at least you have it. Hopefully by April this won't be an issue!

I just checked NBC and CBS weather forecasts and found they've upped the snowfall totals for coastal York and Cumberland counties. Portland now stands to get 4-8 inches. I think I made the right call rescheduling the workshop to March 20th.

It's hard to believe that we could be wiped out 2 months in a row, but another weather mess is on our doorstep.

After thanking hard and long, I've decided to reschedule the March 13th meeting to the following Thursday, March 20th.

The forecast for Thursday in the Portland area is for a total accumulation of 2-4 inches, the storm tapering off at noon, which is just fine and dandy if you live in the Portland area, but some of our writers live inland where snowfall totals are much higher. So I'm playing it safe and hoping that you'll all understand and will be able to come to BAM on the 20th.

Please accept my apologies if this inconveniences you.

The following submissions are for review at our March 13th Meeting :

    Kevin's Caterpillar Yellow

    Dale's School Spirits

    Jessika's The Collector

    Roger's My Father the Viking

Given that we have a full load to read and review, I'm closing the submissions now, and would ask you not to submit revisions of work before the March 13th meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

I have attended a meet up at BAM last autumn and would love to attend more. I work long hours and found 2 hours travel time plus the meeting to be more than I could do. It was there I met some wonderful people and we shared our projects. Mine has been published and the next one contracted to be published autumn 2014. Thank you again for the invite! ;-)

We're on a short time fuse this month since we had to reschedule the February workshop to Feb. 20th.

Please dust off that short story, chapter of a memoir or novel that you're not sure about or simply want people to read and consider submitting it to our upcoming March 13th meeting.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
