Hey, it's getting a bit nippy and the trees are beginning to change color. Let's go back to the Stone Cliff Inn and look up the Clackamas River at the trees. After, if you want, you can take a little circuit trip to check out the foliage. Here's a map of the ROUTE.

I am so dilatory in posting a location. I've been swamped with other activities, but that's no excuse for not picking and posting a location. I humbly apologize and thank everyone who has responded Yes without knowing exactly where.

Though some Yes may change to No, the Rock Creek Tavern is a great place. We've been there before, but it was back in October, 2007, so it's time for a return trip. A nice drive in the country, and a lot closer that our road trips this summer.

It's a McMenamins, so the menu (PDF) is about the same as the others.

Send me an email with your suggestions.

What the Sam Hill!?! We had a fun trip in July, and August seems to be calling for another road trip. In fact, to the first paved roads in the northwest. A hundred years ago, Sam Hill (different link from before) started building the first asphalt road in the Northwest, with the help of Sam Lancaster who went on to build the Columbia River Highway.

But to prove we're not just motor-head dorks, even of the hybrid variety, we'll also swing by the Maryhill Art Festival, featuring over 50 artists displaying and selling art as well as live music performances, food, and hands-on art activities for families; the festival offers something for everyone. And best of all, it's FREE!

My idea is to drive out as a group (starting at the location we used for the Multnomah Falls run), if you want to, go to lunch at The Glass Onion, then enjoy the arts festival and make our way back home on our own. On the way, we'll stop at an overlook on US/SR 97 and look down on Maryhill's Loops Road. The road winds through a ranch and is likely to have cattle on it, so it won't be open for us to drive. Next month, at Maryhill's Car is King Weekend, the Loops Road will be open on Saturday, September 26th.

Here's a ROUTE MAP

For July we're planning a road trip. Details are being worked out now, but plan on joining us for a Hybrid caravan for most of the 18th. Here's the route, about 140 miles, can you figure it out? Take a look at the MAP. Lots of links and clues on it.

Start on the west side of the oldest public park on the west coast, then left-right and away we go.

You won't have to spend a franklin to get your Levi's button flies, just drive it, Don't get into a hough, just go west, young man, on a plain mill. You're all right for the fourth plain, then left into the fruit valley, keep your jeans on.

Drive through all the fields on the ridge until you feel like a pioneer, but don't go to the library. Pretty soon it's time U haul yourself to the highway and hit the road, Jack, right past Paradise. I mean, what's the point? Unless you really need a pit stop.

Put the cruise control on and relax until you get to the town that was named for the river that was named for the Hawaiian. There used to be a Columbia River ferry there, but only for the railroad. We keep on cruising.

When you want to get off, its as easy as one 2, 3, 4, or the reverse, you've got to take the long view. If you hear a Texas Playboy, you've gone too far this time, so jump off 4 ever, you're as old as Jack Benny. Go see Sacajawea, and her lake. Stay close to the lake, then take the Highway to the Beach and Ocean, Stella!

You may want a drink by now, but it's on the other side of the river in the POSH area, we'll get to that later. Right now we're passing the first salmon cannery in the Northwest, or what remains of it after a gross number of years.

So now we're in the smallest Washington county and almost ready to cruise some more. Time to get the spray cleaner. The pause that refreshes with Earl & Shirley. If we're early, we may watch the bald eagles or linger at an old car show, just for contrast.

Keep looking right and you'll see the rusty roof of one of the last canneries still standing, but it's only 140.

Whee! Up in the air we go in honor of the first woman simultaneously elected to two sessions of Congres. Don't look now, deer, but I see your white tail.

As the hour approaches, the nine (max) prepare to embark for a west port. It's the only one there is hereabouts, so get your queer money ready.

Ten minutes and a little over a mile later, with zero gas use in our cars, we're ready to roll again.

You've got to admire a Scottsman who exports salmon back home, gets the town named after him, and whose name is still used on canned goods all over the world. Did I mention he exported lumber to Australia seven score years ago? And served in the Oregon legislature?

Now we're heading east through the unincorporated Marshland to the river named for the Tlatskanai, who got there before West, then on to the town which takes its name from the river. If you want adventure, at Alston look for Victorian treasure and take the old road, but then you'll miss the bridge Lewis and Clark wish they had going back to the fast track. On the other hand, you could go south to the bee hive.

A little further on, somethng's missing: bundled, removed, and buried. It's not cool, or cooling, anymore, in fact, some parts are hot.

Scoot on south to the county seat, which includes a square mile of water in the city. No wonder it was a bigger port than the upstart we're heading toward. It's 130 years old but established 10 years before Oregon statehood. If you want to go to a rodeo, you're in luck.

Further along we get to a gravelly plain, famous for potatoes, pickles, a big candle, and, yes, gravel.

If you live in Hillsboro or Beaverton, up ahead you can pass on the right, Cornelius, which goes past where we had our April meeting. A few miles later, you can take the new bridge to the old Wapato Island.

Yep, you know where you are now, Linnton! Go home.

Time for the June meeting! Let's go organic at the Laurelwood Public House & Brewery. With sustainable beer, certified by Oregon Tilth, and a great Lunch or Brunch menu (PDFs), and interesting company (YOU!), what's not to like?

This special event, sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, has been expanded to allow all members to attend on June 16th. If you have previously connected with Rich or Jon, please RSVP Yes to this event too so we can all get together.

The Prius is the world’s most popular and best-selling hybrid vehicle. From the first generation Prius, Toyota came out of the gate with the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. This hybrid drive system has revolutionized the hybrid vehicles of today!

The 2010 Prius has raised the bar even higher, soaring to the status of hybrid icon! It has an all-new, more powerful engine and exhibits an impressive 50 mpg combined fuel economy rating. The 2010 Prius continues to be an environmental powerhouse, utilizing the world’s first plant-derived ecological plastic, promoting excellent recycling characteristics.

Toyota knows that the Prius is a success because of people like us! Our enthusiasm for this vehicle has ignited a revolution and they want to say, “Thank you”. Toyota Motor Sales, USA. Inc., would like to extend to you an invitation to see the all-new 2010 Prius before the official sales date, though many of us have had a quick look already. An in-depth presentation and access to the vehicle will allow you a hands-on look, ahead of the general public.

This is not a sales event! It is purely a way to recognize our Toyota Hybrid Enthusiasts with a night of information you cannot get anywhere else. Refreshments will be provided! Please R.S.V.P. immediately if you would like attend.

Based on requests from a couple of members, we're having our May meeting in Oregon's first city at a family-run Pizza parlor, Mi Famglia Wood Oven Pizzeria. But let's meet somewhere else first! (Nearby parking can be a problem.) Let's meet and park on 6th Street, north of High Street, and take the Municipal Elevator down to lunch. MAP

Mi Famiglia has a menu focused on pizza, calzones, paninis, but also has salads and other Italian entrées. They also have great deserts!

The Oregon City Municipal Elevator is the only outdoor city elevator in the US and one of only four in the world. Oregon City, as you may know, was the first city in the United States west of the Rocky Mountains to be incorporated. Established in 1829, during the 1840s and 1850s it was the destination for those wanting to file land claims after traveling the Oregon Trail as the last stop on the trail. It incorporated, and was capitol of the Oregon Territory, in 1848. The plat map for the city of San Francisco was recorded in Oregon City. While Oregon is celebrating its 150th birthday this year, OC is even older.

Let's head back to Cornelius Pass Roadhouse. It's been nine months since we were there last. The spring garden should be lovely. I'll bring a few surprises.

I've found a great place for our next meetup: HUB (that's Hopworks Urban Brewery, Portland’s first Eco-Brewpub to offer all organic handcrafted beers, fresh local ingredients, and a sustainable building with a relaxed and casual atmosphere.) So drive your sustainable car to the sustainable pub. The menu (PDF) focuses on New York-style pizza, but there's something for everyone. Needless to say, the beer is great. The Daily Lunch Special, consisting of a large slice of pizza, a salad, and a beverage is a great deal.

This is the meeting before The Better Living Show so we'll finalize any last minute details. Volunteers welcome! More details to come.
