Learn/talk about D&D/RPGs

A few of us have interest in talking about D&D - learning about it, and starting a game for newbies in a comfortable environment.

Anyone who has interest in learning and/or playing is welcome. We'll just go over the basics, discuss what type of game would be interesting for you, and maybe leave with research homework for characters for those interested in continuing on to play.

Also up for discussion would be the possibility of D&D-light (one night) games/other RPG spin offs, etc.

Most of us who have expressed interest have little or no experience, so anyone is welcome who would enjoy learning and/or playing a strategy/chance and group story-telling adventure game. The focus will be on having fun and doing a little learning together.  Those with experience or interest in DM-ing are welcome too!

I also want to add that theatrical characterization is not a necessity for D&D (as some may think)... so don't be shy about coming, if you are a shy about having to act!

Since I have a pile of uncooked root veggies leftover from the thursday, I'll likely make a hearty veggie stew. I do put a wheat-based veggie meat in it and some beer (that cooks out - you don't taste it), for anyone with allergies or preferences.  I'll have some snacks as well, and tea and sparkling water.

For those who want something different and substantial - Hammies Pizza is about a block away, as well as Pizzacato, if you want to grab your own dinner and bring it in.  It is welcome.

My home has a staircase to the front door. I also eat a lot of nuts and have three shy black cats, so those allergies and superstitions be forewarned.

I didn't expect fun & laughter; I liked it a LOT more than anticipated.

Anyone who is interested in joining a game or learning more, but can't make the meetup, or was cutoff by the rsvp limit - send me a direct message and I will add your info to the list for updates/game invites.

Please keep me updated. I would have loved to have made. Darn germs! Especially interested in a west side group. Thanks!

Hey all. I've been playing D&D for years and would love to help out, DM or what not. This meet-up is kinda tight on space so I didn't know if you would want someone like me at the first session or not.

    • Rachael

Hey Andy! I'm going to message you direct about this.

Thanks to everyone who filled out the questionnaire so quickly!! I've been totally entertained by the results so far! Here's a reminder link for those who haven't: http://wggdnd.weebly.com/1st-me...

Also, Kristi - If you guys want to start a west-side group from the beginning, go for it! I know Gayle has interest too.

I also plan to collect info from those who show to this east-side meetup to help hook people up for groups (not necessarily based on location). So, a spin-off westside game may actually be created from that.

Thanks Heather! I think I will be fine, though. The husband is getting off early that day.
I would really be up for a Westside group if that happens. It has been years since I've been able to do any RPGing and I have been hoping for a good fit to come up.
So, whether interested in east side or westside, should all come to this intro meeting?

I would love to get back into DnD, but i already have a commitment on wednesdays.

I will suggest a board game event on the west side at a public place sometime in December or January. I am also happy to consider organizing a cat-free (and probably west-side, though that's less crucial) D&D group if there's interest.

  • Rachael

Gayle - since you have experience and are willing to host on west-side, maybe a west-side spin off group could happen for those interested? Let us know if you'd be open to that... or start your own kitty-free west side event! If you make a suggested meetup, after two people sign up, it becomes official. Sorry about the allergy-unfriendly environment.

I'm limiting the group to 12 because of my house size and keeping focus with that many people. If it becomes full, don't hesitate to waitlist, and/or we could discuss a need for a west-side and east-side gathering?

Yeah, I don't think I would want a regular D&D game to be at New Seasons, but it should be fine for a first informational meeting. I have done board games at this and other New Seasons, but D&D can be noisy with all the dice, etc.

I am hoping we could use this (or similar) public location for the first meeting, then those who want to continue can figure out a good ongoing location. One possibility, if we don't meet in someone's home, might be a game store: Most of them have gaming tables, and we wouldn't be bizarre-sounding to game store clientele. :) But a home would be more pleasant if we can find one that will work for ongoing adventuring.

As far as meeting at someone's house versus a public place - doesn't DnD require a lot of reading aloud? If so, I'd feel weird doing so at a public venue; yes other customers might be amused at hearing the group talk about mice and dragons and monsters but still...

Kristi, let me know if you want a ride. I work in Beaverton and get off of work around 5:30. I would probably stop at home for a few and then head out, I am located in SE as well so nearby to hosting location.

    November 16, 2012

  • Gayle

Any chance we could do this at a public place instead? Perhaps the dining room area at a New Seasons? There is one at 1954 SE Division, very near Rachael's house...

I love this idea! I'm closing on the 28th so I won't be able to make it. But I'll definitely be watching for the next one!

This sounds fantastic! I am definitely interested and would love to join, but I am tied up on Wednesdays until December 12th. Maybe I could keep up through email until I could join in? This is something I have been wanting to do for a while, so I would like to be kept in the loop with it! Thanks!

I would like to stick to the home of someone I've personally met, or a public space. So, I'm going to list this as being hosted at my home. I know I've met at least a couple of you, so my hope is that you guys feel comfortable with that. If there is a vote to change to cafe, I'm fine with that too. I do have cats. :( So allergies beware.

I will also provide snacks and beverages... on the healthy side, cause that's how I roll. More info on that later.

I'm really interested in this, but will depend on location. I'm in Beaverton, so it depends on if it is somewhere I can make it in time.

I prefer close-in SE, but am willing to go almost anywhere for the first meeting to see if this'll be something I'll be interested in.

Wednesdays are perfect for me. Prefer west side or close-in east side. I can host in SW near PCC Sylvania. Convenient from I-5, not great for Tri-Met to actual house, but PCC is a good place for someone to pick you up if you take bus 44 or 78.

There are no pets here; also, it's a no-onion/no-garlic house. Hope that isn't too much of a hardship if we meet here!

I can't do Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays at all because of my class schedule. No need to move this meetup on my account, because I'm out of town all week anyways, but I'd love to see the next meetup moved to a Monday or Wednesday if that works for everyone else.

    November 15, 2012

    • Rachael

i'm open to moving, if you want to go.... i'm interested in seeing your games. I knew it was a bit soon too.
