Thanksgiving Potluck for Adult Orphans

  • Gretchen's Home

I welcome any of you who have no family in the immediate area and cannot travel for the holiday to see your family. This was started by me in 2008 when I lost my dad and felt the company of others would be wonderful for my favorite holiday.

My specialty is the turkey and my homemade stuffing. I'll ask you to bring the following by your last names:

Gravy and cranberry: A - E

All the paper plates, cups, flatware: F - J

Mashed potatos and sweet potatos: K - O

Veggies and salad: P - S

Pies and toppings: T - Z

If there are "holes" in the potluck menu like appetizers, bring your faves.

Also, bring warm clothes, shoes for the outdoors, and a flashlight as you will be enjoying a nice walk between dinner and dessert.

Of course, football will be on the Big Screen TV.

Who is bringing the other 2 folding chairs I'll need? I forget?

If we want to save on carbs I can make more carrots and turnip mash, it's easy and less filling, makes more room for dessert and another good substitute is summer squash.

    November 23, 2013

  • joanne

Ok..I see no mashed or sweet potatoes. Are those covered? What about Corn? Anyone for corn? And to confirm, I am bringing a salad. I will also bring dressings.

And all: we'll have a wonderful time. PLEASE look at the letter of your last name and the list of what that group needs to bring. Let me know. We're far enough away to be really organized. Oh, and I don't drink coffee but we can work that out if you all need that with your pie(s).

It's a no brainer, I'll be bringing an old world recipe of carrots and turnip, we can vote on how much milk and butter to add and of course I'll need a vase for the flowers.

      1 · September 6, 2013

    • Anna

Since a lot of my stuff is in storage out west, I only have one vase and it's pink....

      November 5, 2013

  • joanne

Gretchen, I saw in your note yesterday, you don't have anyone making a salad. I will be more than happy to if you want. Also, thank you so much for hosting this. Ironically, this will be the first event of Portsmouth and Beyond that I will be attending.

So would you like me o bring salad?

      October 27, 2013

    • Anna

      Yes, please!

      October 27, 2013

  • Anna

Oh, I'll have bottles of water and cans of soda and some bottles of hard lemonade, but that's the only alcoholic beverage choice I have. If you like wine or other drinks, that it a BYOB situation.

    • Anna

Thought about it: yes to a recliner. : D

Only half of you have answered that you will bring what is your part on the list above. Still no plates, cups, flatware, napkins; also a nice big salad for those of us who like to eat healthier. I'm trying to do this as I may not feel all that great for a bit after knee surgery on 11/4. Please let me know. Thanks.

    October 27, 2013

  • Anna

Come on people - any kind of 2 chairs will do so that Arlene and some other "orphan" can join us.

    1 · September 5, 2013

  • Ruth

Gretchen - what a thoughtful impressive invitation! I have been alone on some holidays and I know how appreciated your event could be. I have family to celebrate with this year so I will not be attending, but I look forward to meeting you at some other event.

    Sounds lovely!

    September 4, 2013

  • Anna

OK, I have a folding table & 2 more chairs. If we can get 2 more chairs, we can increase the number. The more the merrier.

    September 4, 2013

  • Anna

Again, room for four more if anyone has a folding table and folding chairs. : D

Unfortunately Wells is way too far for me. I came a few years ago to Amesbury and that was a nice time. So nice of you to do it again. So many have no place to go.

    August 23, 2013

    • Anna

Thank you. I hope it is as nice and homey here for those who make it this far "downeast."

      August 23, 2013

  • Anna

A few of you did not answer regarding what you would bring to the potluck. Please let me know. And again, 4 more can come if anyone has a folding table and 4 folding chairs.

    August 23, 2013

  • Marie B.

I'll bring cranberry sauce and paper plates.

    August 22, 2013

    • Anna

Please bring the gravy. It's a lot of work making home made stuffing and the turkey and setting it all up. I use the drippings in the stuffing which I cook separately and I also use them for soup later.

      August 22, 2013

    • Marie B.

      Will do.
