Who organized?
Toronto Peak Oil MeetUp Host

Elizabeth May, national leader of the Green Party, will make a presentation on the topic of Canada's energy future, the climate crisis and Copenhagen.

Peak oil and global warming are two sides of the same coin - burning hydrocarbons is at the roots of both crisis's. Elizabeth May will address these questions, approaching them from a political angle. Canada's environmental and energy policies will shortly be highlighted at the Copenhagen conference, and the issues are critical for every citizen to know. Ms May will follow her presentation with a question and answer session.

Sorry I missed most of Q&A. However I liked that she knew and understood the chemistry of climate change and at least mentioned Peak Oil. However she missed matching up the opportunities that Peak Oil presents in meeting both climate change goals and a green economy. I thought for a Green Party leader to miss this was surprising. Should peak oil render our capacity to pollute inert prior to the 2016 atmosphere limit, that might be a wonderful gift instead, and the impetus most sought after.

    •  Elizabeth May is a great speaker and the topic is very interesting
    •  How refreshing to hear a politician discuss the most pressing issue of the age, without a partisan script, eh? Thanks to Post-Carbon Toronto for putting this together. One would hope that a future meet-up might seriously look at how Toronto would approach a sustainable, Kyoto-compliant, urban transportation system -VOTE 2010-

Great speaker. Too little on peak oil, but she certainly does a good job with global warming.
    •  She has a very good grasp of the mechanics of Global Warming, its consequences and steps that can be taken by the Federal Government to lower carbon dioxide emissions. She answered the questions she was asked, even expanded on them.
    •  It is always a pleasure to listen to what Elizabeth May has to say. She is very knowledgeable. She explained the science of global warming in a clear and understandable manner and she is really the only political leader I know of that truly cares about the environment, which should be the top priority of any government. I always learn something whenever I go to her talks and this time was no different. Congratulations, Elizabeth!
    •  I agree with all said and think EM is an excellent speaker. We need more concrete action at the political and even legal level. If Health Canada can threat to take away a doctor's license, we should be able to take legal action against government ministries for not doing their job. Is there any petition circulating which we can sign and send to our 'elected' leaders regarding the issues discussed?
    •  The history and science lessons were nice, but this self-selecting audience was already mostly familiar with context. I would have liked to hear more about solutions at the federal level and what May or her party would do differently. I think about 3 minutes were spent on this. Though I have an interest in solutions, it's not obvious to me that "the solutions have all been invented" or that they are readily scalable or easy to implement hence I would also liked to have heard about the obstacles -- why has so little been accomplished. The message that I got from this talk is that it's not in her interest to talk about these things.
    •  She is a great speaker. Very passionate about global warming. Able to drawn in her audience. Very informative. Greater attention needs to be paid to specific local actions that can be taken to stop global warming, for example, it would be helpful to have a representative of an action oriented group there for audience members to reach out to.
