Special Winter Walk & Supper $33.

  • Feb 9, 2013 · 2:30 PM

A unique Winnipeg experience and a wonderful winter tradition! Join us exploring the sights of the city from the Red River, we'll check out the award winning 'warming huts' along the longest frozen trail in Canada.

Our 9 km trek will take us from the Forks along the River Trail and Churchill Parkway. After winding our way back through scenic Wildwood Park to our the dining hall, we'll round out the day with a feast of vegetarian chilli (and all the fixings) and a fun evening with a fascinating talk by Manitoba author, Oriole Veldhuis, on her new book 'For Elise'.

Or download a Feb9thREGIStration form and send in your payment by mail.

Please note - In advance of the event, all registered participants (i.e. paid registrants) will be sent an email detailing our meeting place with parking information and other event information.

This is a 'one-way' hike. Buses will transport us from our meetup location to the Forks.

hiking distance - 9 km
difficulty level - easy to moderate

Expect a 2+ hour hike

COST -$33.

Our after dinner talk -

FOR ELISE - Unveiling the forgotten woman on the Criddle Homestead

Every family has it own unique stories, but not every family is blessed with a storyteller as talented and tenacious as Oriole. In 'For Elise' she has painstakingly unwrapped her once secret family story, and transformed it into a great read that both illuminates the role of women in the settlement of our province, and frees her great-grandmother Elise.
Recommended reading for those interested in family; in the settlement of Manitoba; in women’s history; and for those who just enjoy a really good story.
Oriole Vane Veldhuis, lives and writes in Winnipeg. Having enjoyed a wonderful childhood on a farm near Stockton, Manitoba, her heart remains in rural Manitoba. A varied career of teaching, Diaconal ministry, studies, parenting and travel provided a rich resource for writing. In keeping a promise to her father, Oriole’s research became too intriguing to hoard in her home. In For Elise she offers creative-non-fiction like none other.
