2014--"Are YOU ready?" Preparedness Expo

FEMA reminds us, “Emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere… without notice. Households, businesses and organizations should prepare in the event of an emergency causes you to be self-reliant for 3 days without utilities, electricity, or water, without access to a supermarket or local services, or maybe even without response from police, fire or rescue.”
We need to be PERSONALLY PREPARED to take care of ourselves, our families and our neighbors. Backyard chickens to honey bees, to what does it take to be "fire wise" in a time of bigger wildfires, to steps to take to keep your family physically and spiritually healthy in a time of crisis.
"Are you ready?" Preparedness Expo is an informational expo with a blend of local government emergency responders, private organizations and individuals who are dedicated to disaster readiness. These people will share information on what the government may be able to do, what we as citizens need to be able to do in an emergency, and what we need to be doing TODAY to live a prepared life! The Expo will feature informational booths, hands-on activities, and speakers scheduled throughout the day.

Sorry I am going to miss this event today. I just got "blessed" with 200 pounds of fruit (pears, apples and plums) yesterday. Time to put my canning skills to use.

Cera put up 20 pounds of figs yesterday. We're going to do 45 pounds of Honey Crisp when I get back. What kinda pears did you get?

Is there a meetup time where we will meet and greet? Or just come and go as we please? Larry

It's pretty much an open "come and go as you please" kind of event. However, we can plan to meet up at noon by the gazebo to introduce each other, get know new people. AND we will be gathering for pizza at the Mill Town Pizza afterwards - say approximately 3-4pm. That will give people plenty of time to look at each booth, talk with the vendors, etc. Last year it was small, but it is growing each year (just like the Homesteading Fair next weekend!)

I will have my phone on my and turned on. When you call, it will say "Celtic Cat Shop" - that's my home biz & you got the right number - just say your name and it will xe to my cell phone. Don't hesitate to call!

You can Google map the address, which is really a good accurate map & directions. For those who want it broken down easy: Easiest way is come up I-5 or I-205 to the Washington side of the river (best is I-205 cause we all know what a nightmare I-5 is!). Take your first exit, either way, which is SR-14 to Camas. Stay on SR-14 a long, long way - thru and past Camas. Next city will be Washougal with all its round-a-bouts. Just watch for the Frontage Rd exit...it has a marina/boat launch there too. You know you've got the right exit if you hit a round-about. If you miss the exit, don't worry, you can see the round-abouts from the highway and will have a chance to take the next "exit" (which is just a regular road crossing) and backtrack on Frontage road to the park/marina.

Bring/wear a windbreaker cause you will probably need it! It is right on the riverfront. I will be there probably at, or right after 10am-ish. There is a nice gazebo area where they usually give lectures. Crossing my fingers there are even more booths this year. If you are in the market for turkeys, they had several sets for sale last year (sets of 1 Tom, 2 hens, which is standard). Cast-iron cooking, roasting your own green coffee beans, beekeeping, etc etc etc.

If anyone would like to gather for pizza afterwards, there is a great divey pizza place in Camas called Mill Town Pizza that we went to last year afterwards. Here's a link to it via Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/mill-town-pizza-camas-2

I know this is where I will be after walking around the expo. :D Would love to have others join us and help support a local family-owned business.

For everyone going to this: if you would like to connect while there or get lost on the way in, my Google cell # is: 503.389.0098. That is my "forever" number & transfers to my current cell #. Feel free to keep it handy for this and any other times you may want to get a hold of me. (It will say "Celtic Cat Shop" when you call...that is the correct #!) :) We are so looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible there for this event! Last year, it was a lot of nice basic info, with some more specialized stuff thrown in (beekeeping, roasting your own coffee beans, etc).

Oh, and you should be able to spot me. Since it's supposed to be nice weather, I'll be being my usual summer attire: Black shorts, tank top and flip flops or sandals. The park is very "sandals/flip flops-friendly" once you get past the gravel parking lot. :)
