G.O.O.D. (get out of Dodge): POSTPONED

On bicycles.
Yeah I know, folks have their mega trucks that hold their trans galactic command module. I also know that most of the highways will be blocked, as well as many secondary roads. And I know that exercise is good. And it's important to train with what you have on hand at any time. SO... let's bicycle camp this summer. I'm thinking of riding out to Champoeg Park from SW. It's about 25 miles from Beaverton. And staying overnight in the bike/hike in spot, it's pretty nice actually. There are showers to freshen up after the ride so we'll smell all pretty and stuff for... SMORES. And it will be an opportunity to try out some skills too. Like, do you really need that potato masher in your 72 hour bag? I also think it would be a great time to hold a couple of classes on... well, you tell me.

The point of the event is to G.O.O.D. without the use of a car/truck/van, etc. Some computer models reflect that congestion on the ten mile circle will make movement of a larger vehicle impossible. If that became a reality then the ability to G.O.O.D. without a vehicle would become necessary, so... the bike. This event hasn't gotten much traction and I'm going to postpone it. I think I'll look at a combined event for next year that includes any form of transportation. With enough lead time we could reserve one of the Group Spaces available at many campgrounds. Those that want to car camp would be able to host rest stops for hikers/bikers along the route too.

Does anyone want to pick up the Event Coordinator on this?

We could do a separate biking and vehicle event and coordinate it via radios for practice. Each group would only need one ham operator.

Excellent idea! I was thinking of incorporating multiple EmerPrep activities into the fold... as long as it doesn't become so convoluted it doesn't happen.

Fabulous idea. I'm super envious. Moving my entire household this weekend so I will not be joining you in body, but definitely with you in spirit!

What about those of us who does not have a bike? There was a brief discussion about borrowing/buying but there was no conclusion. Any suggestions as to where I can get a inexpensive bike?

Sounds like a great idea and a lot of fun. I've never traveled that far by bike but would be willing to give it a shot! Maybe a fire starting class or something to do with traveling and being as unnoticeable as possible..getting past those road blocks or finding alternative routes..maybe have a few surprises a long the way to be encountered and see how we do in 'that' situation....test run with situations to over come...maybe that's a bit too much...just kinda brain storming here! Anyway sounds like a great meet up Brett!

Hey, did you get my email about Friday?

Love your feedback. Now this is what the group needs! We're totally casual about the trip and we'll take all the time we need, which really isn't that long. Most likely we'll start in the morning and be at the site for a late lunch. I really like your thoughts on the situations along the route. What about two or three staffed stations along the way where you had to perform a task? Maybe filter water, start a fire, build a rocket ship... hmmm. If your imagination is for hire, ok not really hire- maybe loan, we could co-op this and make it really great.

Outstanding. I'll email you and we'll do some stuff off the site line...

I can think of all sorts of activities in route. feel free to contact me offline.

I love the idea, especially stations for tasks. It would allow those who are not physically able to participate as well.

I'm not sure what the H3 does, but if you're familiar and your think it would help... let us know what you can do.

H3 is an organization. We had many of them overseas. They call themselves drinkers, with a running problem. everyone gets a hash name. usually very crude and rude in nature, people are chosen for each run to set up the run route, setup the watering holes, etc. Google it for more info. we could take this fun and interesting concept and apply it to this bicycle event.

Maybe we could put at request on the site here. Or, maybe you could be in charge of one of the "station" along the route?

I think making a spot where people that need a bike or people who might have an extra bike available that they would be willing to lend or sell can connect is a good idea...would allow more people to have a chance to participate.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
