Our 2nd Meetup

Hi everyone!  We are going to keep our Primal meetup going!  The next meetup will be at Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor.  This will be a planning meeting as we seem to have lost touch with Erik, the previous organizer.  Come prepared to discuss where, when, and what you would like to do for future meetups.  See you soon!

I was disappointed more people didn't show up. Thanks Nan & Jessica for sharing since I'm totally new to Paleo. Need a different location next time... too hard to find.

Forgot to fix my clock ---I hope you all don't want to "fix my clock" now for this last minute change! So sorry! Will be at the next one, for sure!

Oh my goodness.. I am so sorry that I can not make it. I was really looking forward to today. Hope I am not letting anyone down. There many good people with information that will be there today

Hey everyone, I am SO sorry, but I'm not going to be able to make the meetup today. I have some flu-like symptoms and I don't want to risk spreading the germs. I was hoping that it would pass by now, but no such luck :( I passed along the info that Erik gave me to Lissa, but here is the recap: Erik is planning future meetups. He has some ideas as the weather gets warmer: hikes in Metro parks, visiting a local farm, meeting at the Eastern market/farmer's markets. He is also planning something with Jason from Crossfit Northville to learn more about functional exercise. The next meetup will be in Troy/Royal Oak/Birmingham, but he did not give me a date. He welcomes any suggestions that the group comes up with. Again, I apologize for not being able to make it. Hopefully, I will catch you all at the next one. Have a great time!

This is a little bit last minute, but I've been thinking about our agenda for Sunday. If anyone has interest, I would be happy to do a short info session on a Paleo and health-related topic. "Healthy fats" always seems to be an area of interest for clients that I work with. Does anyone have any other suggestions or a health-related topic that they are really interested in? I thought this could bring some purpose to the meetup, since Erik is back and planning future meetups and that does not need to be the focus of our discussion. Let me know your thoughts!

    2 · March 8, 2013

    • Brian

The "Healthy Fats" topic sounds great! I'm also interested in understanding a good balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and an awareness of their sources in the foods we may be eating.

Just to clarify- the group is NOT leaving the metro Detroit area. A few of us were very interested in keeping the group moving along and a member had graciously jumped in and volunteered a location in Ann Arbor. This was supposed to be a planning meeting since we had lost contact with Erik, the group organizer. Thankfully, Erik is back and planning future meet-ups. We are still going to have the meet-up this coming Sunday for those that are interested. It will be a nice get-together with lots of conversation about the Paleo/Primal lifestyle. Also, those that attend can get some suggestions together to give to Erik to assist him with planning future meet-ups. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday!

I am in Ann Arbor and I love Zingerman's. My favorite restaurant is Zingerman's Roadhouse. My only issue with the Deli is they are not at all Paleo friendly...they are sandwiches...I haven't eaten there in 3 years because of this.

Well, A2 already has all the good groups. I only joined this group because it said it was in Berkley, near me. Otherwise, I can't come. I wish it said A2 when I got the invite.

The group is not permanently located in Ann Arbor. I'm not sure what Erik's plans are, but the initial thought was to have meetings in different locations over the metro area...

      March 6, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

Hey, if enough members are from Ann Arbor, maybe we should make a point to alternate the meetings between Ann Arbor and Detroit area. That's a fair option.

    March 5, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

Well, I do have a son in Ann Arbor so I can combine the attendance with a visit to him. But, to keep things going, I question the idea of moving it to Ann Arbor right away ---that is, unless a majority of the membership is from Ann Arbor. I do not know the answer to that. As I say, it's not a problem for me either way, I'm just bringing that to your attention from a strategic perspective. I do see that, already, the comment directly below from Kathleen Lesnau about Ann Arbor being "too far", shows a concern about the distance. (Is that the tip of the iceberg? or is most everyone "on board"? 9 attendees so far is not really that bad.) Anyways, I'm going either way and am still very excited about the group. (OH, AND AS AN ASIDE, my Paleo Spirit group was attended by Sandra McNeill from WWJ with her cameraman taking video interviews. It was a pleasant and utter surprise. Sandra just found us on meetup and showed up. If Primal comes back to Detroit in the future, I'll let Sandra know. )

The purpose is not to permanently have meetings in Ann Arbor. Ideally, it would be nice to have them at various locations in the metro Detroit area, so people from all over can join in the fun. Ann Arbor is a bit of a hike for some, but there weren't a lot of suggestions forthcoming and we would just really like to keep the group going. Nan had graciously jumped in and suggested a location, so we went for it. Please feel free to post any suggestions about what locations and times would be good for the future. Also, it seems that Erik is staying involved with organizing future meet-ups, so we need to make sure that he is aware of members' preferences on where/when to meet. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hi All! I DEEPLY apologize for my absence. A combination of getting sick, life events, and work somewhat derailed me for a bit there. However, I am working on lining up more events for the next few months. I will be out of town this weekend and next and won't be able to attend the event at Zingerman's. However, a huge thank you to Katy and Lissa for setting up what is sure to be a great event. I can't wait to hear how it goes. Again, sorry for the silence on my part, but I am working behind the scenes. :-) Please keep the event suggestions coming and I'll see you all soon!

I'm glad to hear that everything is okay and we are all looking forward to your continued involvement as the group organizer! Do you have any idea when you are planning the next meeting? We hadn't heard from you, so the purpose of this meeting was to get some solid thoughts together about future meet-ups and activities. I don't want to continue with planning if you have other ideas for later in March or April...please let us know your thoughts!

Okay, how about Saturday, 3/9 at 12:30? We could meat at Zingerman's Roadhouse (wonderful food but pricey) in Ann Arbor? Or we could do it cheaper by going to Zingerman's Deli and just have tea or something... there's an upstairs that would lend itself to a group. Jolly Pumpkin is also wonderful (you can just leave the bread off the sandwiches which is what I do). Thoughts?

Hi Nan, Zingerman's deli sounds good to me and the time works. Maybe we can make this meeting more of a planning meeting for future meetups since we seem to have lost the previous leader.

Dr. Dale, thanks for the invite to your spiritual meetup group. I appreciate the offer very much. Who will be preparing the Paleo meal? Are the members invited to participate in preparing the meal? Personally, I tend to get very nervous anytime someone prepares food for me, because I tend to become very ill if there are any "non-Paleo" ingredients accidently included. My primary interest remains in keeping this current group going (focusing on the diet/nutrition part of Paleo). I've tried emailing Erik, but I have not heard from him. I also hope that everything is well with him. Lissa and I are going to proceed with planning the next Meetup and anyone else that wants to help can feel free to do so. At this point, it is late in the month and the next meeting with likely be in March. Any suggestions on times/locations/activities would be appreciated.

    February 23, 2013

    • Dale (Dale B.

Well, certainly the primary focus should be on the Paleo Diet. Meanwhile, are you looking to have a home for the meeting? Or could it be a business location. Even though "The Balance" holistic message center hosts my Avatar Paleo Spirituality group, the owner, Aoghain, would offer his location in Berkley, MI for your meeting on a different day if you wanted to use it. (You can contact him through the Avatar site that shows a link to his business address and phone.)

Would love to come... just like everyone else, depends on when/where. Should one of us take the bull by the horns and propose a day, time and location? Perhaps we could meet this Saturday during the day since the last one was during the evening?

Nan, sorry I missed your message. I think someone does just need to jump in and propose a date/time/location. I'm going to be out of town next weekend, but the following weekend is good for me.

      February 23, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

check out www.meetup.com/wild-shamanism for the Feb 27 meeting for those who wish to attend. (I well understand that would not include you, Lissa, and I don't mean to offend you by making this offer to other members.)

    February 23, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

On the other hand, I know these side comments are not the primary concern right now. I am as distressed as the rest of you that we're not hearing about a February date. Has anyone heard from Erik? I did try emailing him, but heard nothing. I hope he's well and in good health (certainly he's eating right!) My Avatar spiritual group has over 250 members, so my intent in offering a Paleo meal at my group's Feb 27th meeting was not meant to "steal" any members from Primal Detroit. I love this group and have been afraid to introduce my own membership to the Paleo Diet (because many of them are the reverse of some members here ---they're interested in the Paleo-spirituality only, and not the diet). Nonetheless, it is my attempt to "do something" by offering the Feb 27th date for an exclusively Paleo meal. (I hope I don't alienate any of my members, but I think they can, at least, try eating Paleo once.) But, you're all invited to eat w us, and can then just watch or go after eating.

    February 23, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

By the way, given that Erik mentioned at our original meeting that he was interested in everything about the hunter-gatherer lifestyle (indeed, it is why I assume he decided to call the group members "hunter-gatherers"), I have been offering additional aspects of Paleo health and spirituality to the group ----on the assumption that some my hold this deeper interest, and some may not. My focus has also been on Paleo exercise and Paleo childrearing inclusive of teaching children to eat Paleo (which is the reason I mentioned "The Paleolithic Prescription" book that includes the diet along with exercise and child-rearing). So, I'm not trying to "push" anything, it's up to any individual to decide which additional aspects of Paleo life are of interest. (So Lissa, I notice that, in every one of your last 3 posts --however brief, you never fail to interject "I am not interested in ritual". You've made your point loud and clear. No need to keep repeating it. Each can opt to or not.)

    February 23, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

Hello fellow Hunter-gatherers, Here is a hunter-gatherer "grace" for the date when we meet and partake in a Paleo feast:

"Oh Mother Ko, give us this day our daily meat. You came up from the Earth and, as they danced, showed our hunters the way to the herd and allowed their aim to be true. Oh Father Goha, give us this day our daily fruits, nuts and vegetables. You brought down from the Sky the sun and rain to make them plentiful for our continued gathering. Let the joy of communal celebration be ever remembered as we share in the bounty of our extended human family. Let our bellies become full with good food and laughter. Thank you from the bottom of our grateful hearts. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Amen."

AND FINALLY THE BIG NEWS: My two prior posts have been leading up to an amazing current article in Newsweek a month ago called "HOW TO RAISE A CHILD THE HUNTER-GATHERER WAY" by the foremost evolutionary anthropologist today, Jared Diamond (check out, also, his PBS special "Guns, Germs, and Steel"). You see, the 1988 "Paleolithic Prescription" included a chapter "The Natural Child" and really has been proven to be, again, way ahead of its time! So all you young Paleo-Parents who, I'm sure, plan to raise their children with the Paleo Diet, here's something more to consider: http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/12/16/best-practices-for-raising-kids-look-to-hunter-gatherers.html "nuff said" (or, some of you might say "quite enough said" ---but I hope I've inspired a few of you and have not been too annoying to others)

    February 18, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

Here is the definition of the entire Paleolithic Paradigm: "The life-styles of our Stone Age ancestors can be seen as paradigms for human life today. We share their genes and, despite the millennia which separate us, we can mold many aspects of our lives so as to recreate, selectively, some of the biological conditions under which they lived --conditions which remain appropriate and “natural” for humans today. Their experience can also help us assess the endless stream of health promotion ...recommendations which issue forth from friends, doctors, popular health books, the media, academic institutions, medical organizations, and the government. More often than not, these sources differ in detail and give contradictory advice; some are so extreme they seem preposterous. Our Paleolithic ancestors’ 2 million year experience, however, provides a guide to optimal human functioning ---a benchmark against which these recommendations can be sorted, judged, and selected" (p 270).

    February 18, 2013

  • Dale (Dale B.

Does everyone know the first book unveiling the Paleo Diet? The book was called "The Paleolithic Prescription" (Eaton, Shostak, and Konner 1988) and with chapters like "Hunting and Gathering in the Supermarket", it remains a classic. Yet the book includes a chapter on Paleo-excercise, Paleo-feminism, and even Paleo-parenting and is still years ahead of its time. I encourage all to pick up a copy! The next post will give the definition of the Paleolithic Paradigm, for the broader health perspective.
