Paddle and Picnic on the Broad River

Join us for a paddle down the lower segment of the beautiful Broad River.  Expect the excitement of navigating thru and around rock shoals, the awesome scenery, the abundance of native plants and turtles sunning themselves on flat rocks and half-submerged logs! Kayak and canoe rentals are available at the outpost which includes PFD's but you are welcome to bring your own kayak/canoe.  Cost is $20 per person for a canoe or kayak.  The trip down river is 3-4 hours so you will want to bring snacks and water.  We can picnic down by the river at the launch location after being shuttled back to the Outpost. Bring a dish to pass and your preferred beverages.

So, some of you remember me falling into the river while kayaking? It's going to sound nutty to some, but I think one of the reasons I was so very calm during the actual plunge, and then the kayak on top of my head--keeping me under water--was Beth Groundwater's books of her RM Outdoor Adventure series featuring Mandy Tanner.

My first knowledge that her writing was great was that I was washing dishes and wondering what film it was with the images in my head? I couldn't figure it out. Then I realized it was never a film, but a book so vividly written, my mind had turned it into a film. But the other knowledge? Her work brought me calm that would prevented that plunge turning into something awful, rather than just giving me a fit of nerves. I trusted her love of the river. She helped me learn mine. http://bethgroundwater.com/Deadly_Currents.html Yes, I'm plugging her book. But I know that I would have been far more panicked during that event had I not read her work.

Had a great time despite the 10 foot drops and the cottonmouths and the sandemons!
Food and fellowship after was great.
Hopefully I'll be recovered enough for tubing next week ;)

Hmmmmm... trophies... Back when I did endurance riding with my horse, the American Endurance Riders Association had this motto-- To Finish Is To Win. so I'm thinkin' if we all arrive at the end happy, healthy and hungry for dinner somewhere together, we had another winning Prime Time experience. Works for me!!!

Stranger Amongst Us: How could one tumble off an inner tube when literally surrounded by a family ensconced in rubber doughnuts? Somehow the current delivered me into the middle of a vacationing unit: I traveled at least 2/3rds down the river, surrounded by 9-11 year olds and their parents. Everyone wondered who the hell I was, but were too polite to ask. Who knows? Maybe I was a long lost relative catching up with them----a spinster aunt, out on the river, traveling .Uncomfortable silences sank my spirits a bit, as I had nothing to contribute to the conversations, other than an occasional glance and half smile, mostly toward the children, hoping that distraction would conceal my desperation and underwater kicks to dislodge myself from that circle. I kept looking around for some means of escape, hearing familiar laughter lilting over the river, receding into a memory of those I once knew. River, take me where you will!

Lower water levels this year apparently made more interesting ripples and unexpected drops, and getting stuck on rocks. Picnic afterwards was great, never had an infusion before, thanks Maria.

Hi, everyone. I'm new to Georgia. I don't have a car. But I would really love to go paddling and picnic together. I'm in downtown Athens. I wonder if anyone nearby who is so kind to give me a lift?

So: I'm thinking of bringing a water infusion to share. My choices: blackberry with lemon balm and pineapple sage, or blueberry with lavender. I *might* be able to do both. I've already bottled up the last of the raspberry, rose, and vanilla--but it was the last of it, so it's a bit more vanilla than fruity.

I trained in Latosa Escrima, and haven't found anyone to cross sticks with in forever as well. HEMA is a new would be passion. I may still attempt that Long sword class in a couple of Saturdays, but work... oh well. And, I was a bit nervous about going all by my lonesome.

Sorry to miss this one. We're in OH (Sharon, now that's booooring!). Tangie's father was in the hospital, but was released yesterday. Barring any complication, we'll be back in time to have everything ready for the pool party. Looking forward to seeing everyone!
