Entreproducers Townhall Meeting - May 2014

A monthly gathering of Entrepreneurial filmmakers in the Bay Area. The Townhall is all about getting Filmmakers, Marketers, and Business people talking and networking. It's an interactive event where you'll meet people you might not otherwise meet, and do more than just sit and fiddle with your Smartphone, or just listen to speakers talk about their work. The Townhalls are for sharing useful information, and meeting useful people to grow your team and your company to the next level.

6:30-7:00 Loose Networking, Mingling, and Snacks
7:00-7:15 Producer Foundry Organizers announcements and housekeeping.
7:15-7:30 Community/Crowdfunding Announcements (email Ben for Details)
7:30-8:00 Community Discussion
8:00-8:15 Popcorn Presentation Round
8:15-8:30 Raffle
8:30-9:00 Networking follow-up

We're asking for a 5 dollar suggested donation at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. We'd rather have you there without the donation, than not have you there at all. The money is primarily to cover location costs, and the cost of the snacks.

Your map on the invitation only showed Muni, not Bart. But now I know.

Since this came up last night, here's all the information on the Rally for AB 1839

    Step 1:
JOIN US AT THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA RALLY FOR FILM INCENTIVES
    Saturday, June 14th
    10am to noon
    The Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco
    Keynote speaker: Danny Glover
    RSVP today at http://www.filmworksca.com/filmitnorcal

    May 28, 2014

    • Ben Y.

Step 2: Become an advocate for this bill. At the rally we’ll have actions you can take to support the bill. We’ll also show you what YOU can do in the coming months to ensure this bill’s passage. California Assembly Bill (AB 1839), The Expanded Film and Television Job Creation Act, is working its way through our state legislature, but is by no means a done deal. We need your support to really demonstrate -- especially to Northern California legislatures -- that we all need this bill to pass, that this is NOT just a “gift to Hollywood”. In fact, AB 1839 includes a 5% bump for production outside of Los Angeles. STAND TOGETHER with your Northern California peers in the film and television industry and LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD as an advocate for expanding the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program (AB 1839)!

PRIZES: We have great giveaways planned – Hotel stays at the Omni and W hotels, dinner @ MaSo, VIP tix for Universal Studios, and much more! But you have to be there to qualify!
Without your physical support, your presence, your voice, we won’t get this bill passed.
Let us know that we can count on you – RSVP today! http://www.filmworksc...

    General question for you all:

How did you like the venue this time? I had mixed feelings on the situation myself, but I wanted to make sure to get community feedback before making any decisions going forward.

    * What was it about the space that made the meetup work better?

    * What was it about the space that didn't help the meetup work?

As always, thanks for coming out, and I loved the conversation last night!

It's nice to be in a film space, and the location was convenient. However, the acoustics and ambient sound made it difficult to hear folks. Also the foot traffic coming through the room was distracting.

      1 · May 28, 2014

    • Randy

I agree about the acoustics. The room we held it in at SFSDF two months back was even worse, if you can believe it.

      Thanks for the comment!

Good to finally get there! Thank you for all you put into making this happen!

The Meet up was awesome. Its great to know that their are so many like minded hard working film makers in SF. I look forward to being an active member and helping film making grow in the bay area.

I also realized it wasn't BART friendly for the May meetup. Looks like June meetup will be better, where closse to BART.

    May 28, 2014

    • Mike P.

i think most meeting locations have been within a two block walk from BART

      May 28, 2014

    • Randy

      Hi Darla,

Sorry, for some reason, the school's OLD location in the Dogpatch was displayed on the map. Made no sense, since the address was correct (925 Mission St., the Chronicle Building at 5th and Mission). Obviously, we'll work to fix this for any future meetups we hold at the school.

We've had to change our plans to attend due to a project under deadline. So sorry we can't mingle and meet. Ugh.... :(

    May 27, 2014

  • Jeff M.

I've changed from yes to no as I am feeling under the weather. I have to save some energy for next week when I'm in LA. Hope you guys have a good one tonight!

    May 27, 2014

  • Darren P.

Backing out of tonight's as I've got script changes to make for a deadline. Catch you next time!

    May 27, 2014

  • Ben Y.

So I've gotten about 3 messages from people on the waitlist so I'm going to make this public. If you're on the waitlist, come anyway. There's about a 95% chance you'll get in anyway. There are generally quite a lot of people that don't show up last minute.
Also, we have fruit, veggies, cookies, coffee, energy shots, and wine for the people who get there right around 6:30, so see you soon!

    May 27, 2014

  • David B.

So the map shows the old location, next to Dogpatch. They are in fact at 925 Mission now. Suite 108.
I just got off the phone with Jessie he set me straight.
    See ya there.

    2 · May 27, 2014

    • Ben Y.

Thanks for that, David. Apparently this is a problem for everyone except me. My map shows it at 5th and mission, which is where it should be. I'll send a message to meetup to see what that's about.

If anyone has issues, please call me at [masked]-7516. I'll make sure someone is there to answer my phone if I'm not on it personally.

      May 27, 2014

  • RRenne

The map and address don't match. Is there a suite number?

    May 27, 2014

    • RRenne

If you click on the map link, it takes you to the Dogpatch location.

Just realized it's not Bart Friendly location. Next time

    May 26, 2014

It's a very BART friendly location, Powell Street Station is only about 2 or 3 blocks from the School.

I'm wowed by how large and enthusiastic the group of people are here for strengthening indie filmmaking in the Bay Area.
I'm also very excited about Movie Making Throughout the Bay, an opportunity for local filmmakers, novice and seasoned, to make movies together on a regular basis.
So I was surprised to see that their annual funding campaign has so few funders. If you're serious about investing in our filmmaking scene, I would suggest that you visit their IndieGoGo page:

Thank you so much for posting about this and MMTB- Beanz! Your Awesome! And it was great to meet you at the filmmaking Potluck event on Saturday! You are absolutely right! I learned a long time ago that I can't depend on people to keep this organization going, they don't even care that it's an official non-profit, everyone is in it for themselves. I actually never joined scary cow for this reason, even being the founder of another large filmmaking group, he would not let me get a free pass because I was too broke to participate, I wasn't good enough... so that's why MMTB doesn't do that and also offers low income fee waivers so everyone can get ahead! It does sadden me and makes me want to give up many years now when I do my funding and no one donates.. it's really hard to keep events going like this in the Bay, especially with insurance etc..

      May 12, 2014

    • Elena

I THANK YOU Ben and team, for giving people a chance to unite and talk about projects etc.. I understand that running something like this can take some funds, and I think your suggested donation bucket worked? I can also offer our production office in Concord for free if you need locations to use to gather. I think that all of us should unite and truly show investors that we are worth investing in because the Bay is united and not just in clicks. That is the problem here and why MMTB has set out to change that, and put us on the Map for filmmaking. Let's get it done!!!

    Hello Foundry,

We're getting a lot of requests for members of our community to be guaranteed a spot to promote whatever they're working on. We do have programming concerns, and don't want this community to be nothing but self promotion. On the other hand, these events do cost money to put on, and there are other things that PF is doing and growing that also require money to maintain. So we're tossing around the idea of selling a limited number of spots to interested community members who want to promote their wares. What do you, our community think about that?

    May 9, 2014

    • yasmin

Don't think it's about promoting yourself. It's about inspiring the community to support your project or vision. And to ask for help where it's needed. Me for one, am always looking for help in the business aspect of film and video: raising funds, legal questions etc.

      3 · May 11, 2014

    • Ben Y.

That's a great outlook on it Yasmin, Very well said. We just need to make sure we enable the people with that mindset to be the ones who we give program time to.

Yeah, I set it up as a repeating event and there are some glitches in Meetup's system.
