Class: Applying Lean Startup Concepts to Product Management

This class builds on the concepts of the "Intro to Lean Startup for Product Managers" class, and discusses how to apply Lean Startup principles and techniques to product management.

Although having attended the "Intro to Lean Startup for Product Managers" class or prior understanding of Lean Startup concepts will help, it is not a prerequisite.

Topics covered include:

  • Challenges of using traditional product management for product innovation
  • Applying lean thinking to product management
  • Capture and sell your product idea without writing a business plan or requirements doc
  • Quickly identify target market segments and customer personas: buyers, users, decision makers, influencers, etc.
  • Identify and develop key stakeholders
  • Identify an MVP
  • Implementing the concepts of Build-Measure-Learn and Validated Learning

The class will be taught by Shardul Mehta, a seasoned product management leader and Lean Startup practitioner. More on his background on his LinkedIn profile. He shares his experiences and thoughts on product management on his blog and can be found on Twitter. Read testimonials from previous students.

This class is brought to you by ProductCamp DC and hosted by Excella Consulting.

Note: Cash/Check payment of $50 will be accepted at the door if there are seats left.

Hi everyone. This class will be rescheduled. Thanks to everyone's understanding yesterday. We got several inches of snow in Loudoun County, and roads were not safe.

I've sent an email with details to the participants. So please check your inboxes. As soon as I have the new date, the class will be re-posted.

Since this class will be rescheduled, anyone who didn't originally sign up will have another opportunity to do so. Another option is the online class that starts next week. It's going to pretty cool with a mix of livestream lecture and hands-on project work. Check it out at

Folks, we're going to have to re-schedule this due to the poor weather. I've sent an email to all participants with some important announcements. If you didn't receive it, please let me know.

Hi Shardul, what happens to class if the Snowquester hits tomorrow?

Hi Stephanie. Thanks for bringing this up. I was planning to send a note out later tonight / early tomorrow. The short answer is it will need to be re-scheduled. The longer answer is the forecast in Arlington calls for 4-6 inches, with snow starting in the morning. I heard Loudoun County (where I live) plans to call off schools tomorrow. I realize this class has been pushed out once already (my fault, since I was sick), but it's important people can travel safely to and from class. Let's monitor the situation in the morning, and we can make a call.

Hi everyone. There's still time to enroll for this class, so hurry!

If the date doesn't work for you, but you're still interested, or you have a friend outside of DC metro who'd be interested, an online version is available starting March 11. The online version is going to be really cool: it will combine lecture with hands-on project-based work. Details at
