anyone interested in Kayak essentials or rolling classes?

I'll put this out there... I will instruct a kayak essentials class at Ackerman's Grove County Park (along the shoreline of Little Cedar Lake near West Bend) on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 starting at 6 p.m. We will tailor instruction to match the wishes of those who show up that evening; anything from introduction to rolling. You will need to provide your own kayak, PFD and paddle (and spray skirt if you wish to roll or practice wet exits.) For those who haven not been there, this is a pretty location with a sandy beach and plenty of parking. There is no entrance fee but there is a fee to use the boat launch, which we will not be using. There will be no charge for this lesson for Project Paddle members. Please RSVP so I know if anyone plans to be there.

I see the Northeastern Wisconsin Paddlers hold classes at the Y in Appleton, Green Bay, and an essentials class in Sheboygan. I wonder if we could hire an instructor or two to hold classes for us in the Milwaukee area?

Did anyone happen to pick up the notebooks and water bottle I left on the picnic table? Please say yes.

The forecast for the early part of the evening tonight looks good so the kayak class will be held as scheduled, starting at 6 p.m. at Ackerman's Grove Park.

Vicki, you might try posting a request to borrow one for this even, either here or elsewhere in a separate thread in the Project Paddle Meetup page. Someone may have an extra one to share. I recommend to everyone that they not buy a kayak until after they take at least one introduction to kayaking lesson.

Any input on where to get a starter kayak or where you can rent one?

The weather forecast for this event says scattered T-storms with 80% chance of rain, so please watch this page Tuesday afternoon. If we need to cancel I will post an announcement here.

As of today, May 14, 28 paddlers have RSVP'd that they are going to this event on June 17. However, I don't trust that number because most of you said "yes" simply to express interest in such a class before the date and location were published. Therefore I have a request. Please take another look at the June 17 date and the location near West Bend. If you are not going to attend, please change your RSVP to "not going" so we can have an accurate count and I know whether or not to recruit additional instructors.

A good instructor that I would suggest is Sherri of SherriKayaks.com. I believe she is out of the Milwaukee area.

You read my mind! The Fox Valley Yakkers often post Appleton classes and I'd like one a bit closer to home. I'm closer to Madison now but up for the trip to Milwaukee. I would love a rolling class with Sherri in the summer. Pool would be cool too if you can find an instructor.

I would be interested in a class. The Lake Country area is certainly closer than the Fox Valley plus I could dine at one of my favorite restaurants, Spitfire in Okauchee, afterwards.

I'm working on my schedule for the summer right now. It will be on SherriKayaks.com in the next few weeks.

I don't teach any indoor classes as it is too expensive to rent a pool and divide the cost among just 3-5 students. I do teach rolling and skills classes in the summer - generally at Upper Nemahbin Lake near Oconomowoc and Wind Lake just south of Muskego.

The Appleton classes require the basic class and are multiple days. It's a fair distance from Milwaukee and I thought it would be nice to do it close to home too. Lannon Quarry and Yahr Park in Washington county come to mind as locations. There is of course Lake Michigan for the truly hardy.
