Wisconsin River has lots of paddling opportunities. IMHO, the best are the stretch downstream of Sauk City. You can paddle upstream 5 mi to the Prairie du Sac dam and back. Or paddle downstream. How far you go is up to you. A one day trip can make the Arena landing. An overnight trip to Spring Green is popular. The river is basically free of dams all the way to the Mississippi, where it meets at Wyalusing SP. There are canoe outfitters at Sauk City that handle rentals and/or shuttles. Generally a good time unless river levels are really low.

Upstream of Prairie du Sac (including the Dells), the river is heavily dammed, so lots of flat water. The Dells area is can be tough. Tricky currents (esp the Narrows), wake issues from jet boats, ducks and sightseeing boats, a high dam (portage in the middle of downtown Wis Dells) and limited options if you dump (the river is remarkably deep in spots and the banks can be cliffs). It's doable early in the day when water conditions permit.
