SCIENCE, FAITH, & THE DRAKE EQUATION:
CALCULATING THE NUMBER OF COMMUNICATING CIVILIZATIONS IN OUR GALAXY WITH CHRISTOPHER MILLER
How much do we rely on facts? How much on personal beliefs? Find out the number of extraterrestrial civilizations based on how YOU would calculate it —
Christopher Miller says:
Please join me as we use the Drake Equation to determine just how rife our galaxy is with aliens – specifically, advanced civilizations technological enough to communicate over interstellar distances. Bring your laptop or mobile device with a spreadsheet, as this will make calculating your personal value much easier.
For each parameter, we will take time to discuss and consider why we choose the value we choose and how much science and faith affected our decision.
Our final values will be placed in a time capsule and entombed in the catacombs below the Blue Moose. When we are ultimately embraced by the galactic community, the time capsule will be opened. The decedents of the individual that got closest to the actual value will be chosen to govern the human worlds of the interstellar government.
Christopher Miller (aka Captain Joy) is a Christian with a BS in Physics from Mizzou and an MS in Astronomy from Rice University. He is currently an adjunct professor at Park University.
Come early to grab a salad supper or something from the café — and to get to know people.
Afterward: The conversations continue at the Blue Moose (a minute away on the north side of the shopping center on the NW corner of 101st and Woodland).
See you Friday night!
