Re: [Provocateurs] Elizabeth Smart blames abstinence-only education

Thank you Katie and Gilbert,
I was raised in a house with a BSN (Mom) and Dad (BS) who were aware that humans are animals and have sexual desire. That didnt encourage us to "do it in the road" but they, being persons who were teenagers at one time, felt that we should know the risks, how to avoid them and what to do should we get an STD. (Never did) My aunt Ob nurse, gave my brother and I condoms (just in case). Beisdes, i dont like old gum thats been sitting in its package for a long time, it gets hard and crumbly and loses its flavor. Chewed gum is experienced gum and it knows how it likes to be chewed. Besides, that gum thats never been chewed by anyone but you, gets really sticky and sticks to your dental work..too much effort. At this point, I think the "gum" metaphor has been thoroughly mined and should be replaced by vagina and penis, so I dont get confused.

Hi ladies! We, Gilbert and I (Katie) were successful in teaching our children SAFE SEX. I answered all their questions from early age to adulthood. Neither my daughter or son EVER got an STD and I only have one grandson to proove my children listened to me! LOL It backfired (joke here). We even supplied a huge jar full of condoms for them and never questioned their use, just kept refilling it. BUT, I did teach them, when married, to be faithful to their spouse. My standards, I know a lot of you out there differ. Today's young folks are on a different path of acceptable sexual interaction and must follow safe sex in order to live to a ripe old age! Just saying!!!!!

No, that is not my point. My point is that her decisions should be based on her needs and wants, including longterm wellbeing, instead of being told her worth as a person depends on how men judge her sexual behavior. Try reading what I actually wrote next time. It's much more polite than beating a poor, defenseless strawman. -Lynne

Anna, I think you're missing Lynne's point.  Had Elizabeth been taught to have sex early and often, she would now be the much better for it.

In case you don't remember, she was the teenager kidnapped and raped for months. She was talking about how they teach that a girl is like a stick of gum and sex is being chewed/used and if you are used too many times, no one will want you. So she thought what is the point of trying to escape....she felt worthless. I knew AO was wrong for being ineffective, but I had no idea how truely evil it could be. What a horrible thing to say to girls, and what a terrible message to send to boys about the worth of girls/women.
