This group was created as a means for individuals who are interested in the scientific study of religion to come together and discuss their passion. Discussion was originally meant to focus around the field of psychology, but it does not have to be limited to psychology, and can entail other fields through which we can ponder the human experience of religion, belief and faith such as neuroscience, biology, religious studies, philosophy, or archeology.
In this group we address all religions and all aspects of them. There are is no political correctness or taboo subjects here. While it is expected that everyone have a mature and respectful demeanor when speaking on the subjects at hand, anything is up for questioning.
Our activities will include book reviews/discussion, review/discussion of scientific articles, theories of religious belief/ experience, and organized trips to various religious organizations to attend their services in which we can later discuss our experience and thoughts, to name a few.
Please be advised that this is NOT a therapy group and not necessarily one that would be good for you to use in your decision making of what spiritual path you should follow. This group is to be a critical examination of religions in general.
Anyone of any faith, educational background, or logical persuasion is welcome. Please be advised; however, that sometimes things may be said that not everyone agrees with, but it is expected that the discussion remains respectful. On the same token, explanations such as "people are crazy or stupid" will not suffice in discussing the reasons for religious experiences or activity. This group will use higher levels of critical thinking than to use such quick write offs.
While it is understood that not every who joins will be able to participate on a regular basis, it is expected that those who join plan to actually participate in some manner, rather it be through the message board or attending meetings/events.
Please check the message board often as information relevant to the topic of the psychology of religion will sometimes be added there.
This group doesn't have any additional upcoming Meetups scheduled.
