CAN A BELIEF IN GOD BE RATIONAL?

PUB PSYCHOLOGY DEBATE: As an experiment, this time the debate will be, in a way, a follow up to the previous session. A few years ago, Dawkins published 'The God Delusion' that became straight away a huge bestseller. Is Dawkins right? Given that we cannot prove or disprove the existence of God, the issue is if the concept of God can be compatible with rationality? Dawkins answer is an emphatic 'No'. God Delusion or Dawkins' Delusion?

The problem with belief in god is, not that such belief is manifestly absurd or false. Rather, the problem is that there are no compelling grounds for adopting a god-based theory rather than any alternative theory; and no rational grounds for believing that, if a god exists, it has the characteristics proposed by one religion rather than any other. In other words, the problem with religion is that faith, or reliance on a book assumed to have divine authority, is not a sensible or productive way to find out about the world or the universe. Rational, scientific enquiry is the only means of making progress in our understanding of the nature of reality.

Like the comment Godfrey, although feel the need to drill down on a couple of points.
Firstly the assumption “there are no compelling grounds” is a subjective statement. There may be no compelling grounds from your worldview, however for someone else…..
Secondly, not all religions are scriptured. There are a tremendous amount of oral based religions in the world.
Rational scientific thought produced the atom bomb. Was that a sensible or productive thing?
Remember, God doesn’t believe in atheists.
      Look forward to the morrow

Hold your guns guys and keep ammunition for tonight! Just one point to make: the topic is not about religion(s). After all, one thing that we know for sure about God is that God is not religious!

    Now this should be fun!
    One question though.
    Define rational.
    Turtles all the way down…….

Absolutely. My point exactly. I shouldn't hang around with these philosophy types, it all gets a bit up its own...

I'm back on the States so can't attend. But if any portion of this meeting is recorded, it would be GREAT if someone (Michael for instance) could post it for us far away followers.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
