WHAT IS MENTAL ILLNESS? Guest speaker: Natalie Banner

In recent years there has been growing awareness of mental health and mental illness in the public consciousness. Prevalence rates of some disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are increasing, antidepressant prescriptions seem to spiral year on year, and the use of psychiatric terminology seeps into everyday conversation (ever heard a perfectionist described as ‘a little OCD’, for example?) But what exactly is mental illness? Is it different from physical illness in important ways? Are mental illnesses ‘medical’ in nature or more to do with what Thomas Szasz called ‘problems in living’? Addressing these questions both conceptually and through thinking about subjective experience, Natalie will attempt to build a framework for discussion on this controversial but fascinating topic.

Sounds fascinating! Wish I could attend! Hope the role of drug companies in the writing of the DSM will be included :)
