"Building a Community of 7 Million Readers and Writers"

This event features an interview with Allen Lau, the CEO and co-founder of Wattpad, a community in which millions of readers and writers share stories on-line, interacting via text, video, images and conversations.

If you're not familiar with Wattpad, it's already quite a success story with:

  • 7 million unique users a month
  • 3 Million comments/votes a month
  • 2.5 Million stories, 250,000 new ones added every month
  • Users spend an average of 30 minutes on Wattpad twice a day
  • Users spent 2 Billion minutes on Wattpad in Q3 2011

Here's Allen's bio: Allen Lau is is the CEO and co-founder of Toronto-based Wattpad. Wattpad's investors include Union Square Ventures, Golden Venture Partners and W Media Ventures. Prior to co-founding Wattpad, Allen was CEO and co-founder of FeedM8, a mobile advertising company that was acquired by Upstream Systems. Before FeedM8, Allen was CTO and co-founder of Tira Wireless. Founded in 2001, Tira raised over $30M in VC funding and was a leader in mobile content publishing and deployment.

Back by popular demand, Michael Healy, Executive Director (Author and Publisher Relations) at the Copyright Clearance Center, will be the interviewer.

I thought that it was very interesting to discuss the emerging platforms that are shaping the way young readers and writers experience the literary lifestyle. The fact that publishing is so rapidly changing is staring us in the face, and whether or not we've figured out how to deal with that yet it's refreshing to see that some people are trying.

Excellent speaker and excellent moderator. Really informative. Only wish there was a little more time allotted.

Another very good meetup. Your roster of people has been superb. This was not as enlightening as some of the others, due to the proprietary aspect of some of the information. Understandable, but since this is still a startup, might be interesting to revisit in 18 months.

He was so personable. Allen inspired me to be creative in building my own publishing platform. 7 million readers from nothing in a short period of time is astonishing. Thank you Allen for the inspiration.
