Techtalk: Facebook Analytics + How to Become an Engineer Without a CS Degree

  • October 30, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

UPDATE: Good news! Since this event has been so popular, our Facebook friends are increasing the size of the event. HOWEVER, since it's a bigger event, they need to know who is coming in a slightly less ad-hoc way, for security reasons and all that jazz.

IF YOU WANT TO ATTEND, please RSVP at http://pyladiesmeetupgroup.splashthat.com/

--

Come hear Brina Lee from Instagram speak about how she transitioned from an English major into a engineer...without having a CS degree*.  More details on the talk to come!

There will also have a second speaker talking about how Facebook does engineering and data analytics - should be fantastic for all you data science geeks.

We're still shaping this speaker lineup, but a huge, huge thank you to Facebook for hosting this awesome event.  Watch this space for updates.

---

* I was kindly corrected - Brina eventually went back and got her masters degree in CS. Rock on.

This was such a great event! If any attendees are interested in ways to learn to code in non-traditional ways (bootcamps, online, etc.), a fellow Hackbright grad put together an extensive repository for people who want to learn to code: http://michelleglauser.blogspot.com/2013/03/resources-for-learning-to-code-and.html

I enjoyed the event. My first public sniff of the tech world. Thank you. Would someone please tell me what are the good interview prep books that were mentioned?

Very informative talks by both Brina and Pam, who shared many valuable insights on the industry. To hear about your experiences and diverse work histories was truly inspiring.

Thank you Pam and Brina and Pyladies. To tweet about the event do you have any preferred #'s you'd like us to use? :) Inspired by everyone who talked and attended tonight!

Is anybody driving to Mountain View after the FB event?

    October 30, 2013

  • Tiffany T

I'm here right now and it's definitely building 10 which seems to be the only event tonight.

I'm confused; how do I know whether I ever completed the second RSVP? This one:

IF YOU WANT TO ATTEND, please RSVP at http://pyladiesmeetupgroup.splashthat.com/. Just don't recall. What would the confirmation look like?

    October 30, 2013

    • Alicia E.

You would have recieved an email sent from Facebook through the [masked] with subject "You Are Confirmed: Pyladies Meet Up Group".

      October 30, 2013

  • Brandi

I'm assuming the event is in building 10 since that's what's on the splashthat page. Can you please confirm this since the Meetup says building 15?

Might be a late proposal for rides but I am going from El Cerrito/Berkeley area and will have three spots in my car. If interested - let me know!

    October 29, 2013

    • Naomi S.

Thanks, Marina! What time/ from where are you departing?

      October 29, 2013

    • Marina S.

Naomi - I am close to El Cerrito del Norte but can arrange a pickup if it's not too out of the way. I hear the traffic can be bad, so I am thinking about leaving between 3.30 to 4 pm. You can respond to me through meetup's email and we'll take it from there.

Does Facebook have shuttles from Caltrain?

    October 25, 2013

  • Virginia T.

Question on location: on the meetup page, it says building 15. But on the splashthat page used to register, it lists building 10. Which building is the event going to be in?

    October 25, 2013

  • Lukas B.

Just going to say more recently, I'll be heading over there from 650 Castro in Mountain View (happy to coordinate lifts TO) and then going to the city after - again, rides offered. It's a Prius so that's 4 spots in either direction if anyone needs a lift.

Hi! I just moved to SF and saw this event ~5 minutes ago. Would this be female only?

    October 25, 2013

  • Regina W.

It sounds like Brian's van is filling up fast! :) I'm also driving down but a bit later because I can't get out of work until 4pm that day. I'll be heading over to Avis and picking up a car around 4:30pm. You can meet me there as it's in SOMA just a half block from Moscone Center.

I've already got one person going with me, so there is room for two more. You can reply here or find me at Twitter at http://twitter.com/@reginawalton and we'll figure it out.

Anybody from SF going to this? I'm heading down with an empty van.

Works for me. Of course happy to share the cost.

      October 24, 2013

    • Elaine T.

My friend and I can't get out that early so someone can take our spots, thanks for the offer though Brian

  • Margaret M.

Aw, shucks. :( The meetup.com reservation is allowing me to RSVP and passes me a Yes confirmation, but the http://pyladiesmeetupgroup.splashthat.com/ page reads "This Event Is No Longer Accepting RSVP's."
Looks like it's booked up, you may want to close the meetup.com RSVPs to reflect that.

Looking at slides posted after the event will be a poor replacement for attending in person, but I'm interested in seeing them all the same--if it's feasible, please upload the presentation sometime.

Not sure - I'll ask our Facebook friends and see if it's possible.

I recently attended a talk at FB and they had lots of equipment available for streaming and recording. Seems like something they will do for you since there are so many on the waitlist.

I'll drive down to work out of our MV office that day so can give rides back to SF after the event.
