"I want to learn Python" study group

We welcome anyone who would like to learn Python and programming in a friendly environment. This is the first meetup of the fall and starts the study group series.

We meet every two weeks and go through "Think Python: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist" together and also use online interactive tutorials.

Here is the link to the book:

An awesome book for any beginner in programming!

*******************HOW TO PREPARE********************

First session we start light, if you are a total beginner, don't worry, you don't

have to set anything up.

But if you feel confident, please follow these links to set up Python on your

Please, answer this poll about your Python level:

12:00 - 12:30  Coffee and mingle (form groups)

12:30 - 13:00  Intro from the organizers + time for questions

13.00 - 13.45 Getting started with the work

(Working on code academy for beginners, projects/tutorials for more advanced participants)

13:45 - 14:30 Lunch

14:30 - 15.30 Continue working coffee whenever needed

15.30 - 16:00 Wrapping up the work and mingle

If any male friends of the PyLadies would like to attend, please keep in mind that the study group is targeted primarily at women - and while we do appreciate your support, in the case of a wait list we will have to make room for members defining themselves as women. There are a lot of developer groups and networks where men are in majority - and since we are a well needed contrast to those, we want to give as many ladies as possible the chance to experience this. Since you are a member, we believe you share our thoughts on this and hope for your understanding if you are giving up your spot. Please let us know if you do not agree or have any questions about this.

    Basic computer course in Swedish:

Du som känner dig osäker vid en dator men ändå vill vara med och lära dig Python med oss i höst kan följa den här distanskursen som hålls av KTH och SU under sommaren. Du behöver inte vara antagen till universitetet för att komma åt materialet - det räcker med att skapa ett vanligt konto.

Gå in på länken och tryck på den gröna knappen "Kurskonto" för att registrera dig som användare.

I have absolutly NO experience in programming (and know very little about computers) but would like to start to learn. Do you think this will be too advanced for me?

    June 28, 2013

    • Amanda S.

I am also a beginner but gonna join the event and at least try to learn. Maybe it's nice to know that we are a few with no experience :)

We will take it from the beginning, no experience needed. Python is an excellent first language - it's easy and fast to get started with, and when you are comfortable with the basics you'll see the complexity and endless possibilities behind what looks simple at first glance. This will be perfect for you!
Even though you don't have to be a computer wiz to learn how to code, you should know how to install software, open your terminal and such before attending.

      Welcome. :-)

    That sounds great. Thanks!

Hi Emma! I hope not! If you really want to learn, nothing is impossible! We'll provide (soon) a few pointers to where you can start to prepare yourself for the study group. I guess that after looking at the introduction you can decide if you still feel like you want to learn Python and programming. :)
