Web Development Python Meeting -- PyMNtos Library App -- Part 1

*** Note the slightly later start time at 7:30p. This is due to a scheduling conflict at Common Roots. ***

We are going to build a Django based library app for PyMNtos' now growing library.  The Web Dev meetings being mostly mob programming with discussions and information dumps.  We will also schedule small hack nights for more individual work, discussion and team work.

RVSP'ed members please take our one question poll:

One Question Poll

We don't want people to be afraid to write code.  There is no better way to learn than to "Just do it."* You don't need to be an "expert", just a good attitude and realize we all start at the same place at one point in time.

So this series of meetings is not just for beginners, this is also a place for more experienced web devs to mentor and learn how to build open source software.  It takes a village!

Watch this space for more information as we draw near!

* Thank you Nike...

If you want to play with stacks but don't want go through the setup on your own machine then you can get a small free dev environment setup on Nitrous.io.

    https://github.com/PyMNtos/stacks/wiki/Dev-Environment-Setup#nitrous

Andrew C suggested I share this since it what I'm using while working on stacks.

Another option is vagrant (http://www.vagrantup....). It works with virtualbox and allows you to quickly spin up and down virtual machines with your app. If I get some time this week I will make a vagrant file and add it to the repo. This way you can get a consistent dev environment across all os's.

Thanks a ton Abdul. Hopefully we can make the whole setup process less Linux focused. Trevor, that sounds sweet. Vagrant looks dope.

Took a little mucking around, but appears that I got the Stacks environment properly configured on Windows. I'll see if I can repeat on another machine. If so, I'll update the docs with the Windows specific notes.

That would be soooo awesome!.. totally saves me having to boot up a pirated VM... always a pain :/

Hey all, so I don't know if we're doing something more formal tomorrow, but I set aside some time to hack on 'stacks'. I figure if nobody has any better suggestions, I'll just hack at Caffetto around 7 (it's like 2 blocks from common roots but they don't shutdown the WiFi at 6). If anybody wants to join me, you are more than welcome!

BTW I believe they have a $5 minimum for cards so bring cash if you can.

Hey Guys, are we meeting up tonight? And if so, Common Roots? Elsewhere? I'd be down for 7:30 or so.

Ashley, If you want to work on project, you will find meeting notes at https://github.com/PyM... We are also planning a 'hack night' on Tuesday 12/10 for an unorganized work night.

bummer. Won't be able to make the meetup today; really under the weather.

In order to make it easier for people who are newer to Python web dev participate in our 'build and app' exercise, we are working on recommendations for a standard development stack/environment for the project. The first step in doing that is to understand what operating systems participants will be using.

If you are planning to participate in the project that we are starting on Dec 3, please take a minute to complete the one-question poll at: http://www.meetup.com/PyMNtos-Twin-Cities-Python-User-Group/polls/

    Thanks, David.
