This is not strictly about quantified selves (even if I am trying to find a way to add some way of using sensors/measurement/cameras), but about analytical attitude to body:
I am leading tomorrow an experimental workshop called "body for brainiacs", hoping to make it a regular exchange about how geeks/hackers/smart people tackle their body/mind challenge.
Everybody is welcome to come and look.

Hi all, I really enjoyed the meeting. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the startup that wants to prevent selfmade diseases. They want to take a blood sample and analyse it. Can someone help me out please =)

    Hi all,
I am looking for some advice how to measure physical activity. The focus is to make different physical activities comparable.

Calories are the most basic approach and I would love to use this. Has anyone a formular that takes into account the age, height, gender and weight with a corresponding table of the variables for different sports? There is this website http://diaet.erdbeerlounge.de/Kalorienverbrauch-berechnen-mit-Kalorienverbrauchsrechner that calculates on basis of age, height and weight. This website http://www.fitrechner.de/kalorien-grundumsatz-berechnen/ inlcudes gender, height, weight.

I already extracted the formular including the weight and the table for different sports here http://www.novafeel.de/fitness/kalorienverbrauch.htm

I would be very happy for every comment concerning measurement units for physical activity.

Hey guys! I'm new here. Quick question: does anyone have any experience with ingestible sensors? They're generally quite new and on the verge of invading the markets.

  • Martin R.

Me too! I am preparing a study where we want to show that physical activity correlates with a "attacks" of a certain disease. I am going to test the jawbone up but also want to have a low tech solution that tracks more than the number of steps. Has anybody experience with tracking all physical activity?

    May 6, 2013

    • Martin R.

Thanks for your answers. For a low tech solution we might use a simple step counter with the hypothesis that if the overall physical activity decreases the amount of steps do too. This also expects that people do not change their habits quickly.

I have tested the Jawbone Up, the Fitbit One and the K&R Fitty No 1 Schrittzähler. So far no product was really convincing. The Jawbone Up needs much more manually attention than expected. Also we have no access to the API and are still waiting for an answer from the support. The fitbit one does not need manual attention at all. But I personally don't see that the extra costs in comparison to a simple step counter are justified. The API is also not convincing. The Fitty No 1 can store stepcounts up to one week. This was really handy for the first 3 to 5 days. Than the device started to lose all data at least two times a day due to what seems to be a loose contact. Also there is a lot more to say about the softwares and the presentation of the products overall but this won't fit in here.
