Qigong (pronounced "chee-gong") is one of the cornerstones of traditional Chinese medicine. "Qi" is the universal energy that makes up and flows through everything in the universe. In our bodies, it is vitality or life force. "Gong" means to practice, cultivate, or refine, leading to mastery. "Qigong," then, means to cultivate or refine one's vitality or life force through practice.
Qigong is comprised of active exercises, easy enough for everyone to do, body postures, breathing techniques, and meditation.
Qigong was developed in China thousands of years ago and predates the similar discipline of Tai Chi. Qigong is powerful for self healing and is backed by research for the reduction of stress and high blood pressure. It can complement medical treatment even in terminal, chronic and debilitating illnesses.
Dr. Oz, on the Oprah Winfrey Show, featured a segment on Qigong on her show and his testimonials can be found on www.oprah.com.
Everyone can benefit, regardless of lifestyle, belief system, age or ability. Adding Qigong to one's daily routine can enhance life and health. Children develop increased concentration, executives learn to reduce stress, the senior population increases balance and quality of life, health providers enhance their ability to heal others. It allows each person to take charge of their health, happiness, and inner peace, and helps remove fear from battles with life threatening lllnesses. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qigong can bring balance to the body-mind-spirit connection.
