Meetup #5 - Quantified Biofeedback

  • November 13, 2013 · 6:15 PM
  • ETH Zurich, Hauptgebäude (HG), Floor G, Room 19.1

Please join us on Wednesday, the 13th of November to learn about quantified biofeedback.

Schedule

18:15 - Meet and greet - Some drinks and light food will be available as we meet each other and discuss our self-tracking interests.

19:00 - John Hall - Enhancing health, wealth, and happiness through biofeedback - Executive and lifestyle coaching has become a huge business.  Despite its popularity, It is also somewhat of a 'Wild West', in that the evidence base for its effectiveness is very limited, and there is little consistency in requirements for training and qualification of coaches.  I will present a newly developed program that attempts to inject some science and measurement technology into the coaching process.  ECG technology, stress hormone markers, and biofeedback offer the opportunity to measure outcomes that can demonstrate meaningful improvements in wellbeing and enable optimal cognitive and physical functioning.  I will show how a coaching program incorporating such measurement can be constructed, and demonstrate the use of a biofeedback device to engage a mindful state. Volunteers are also sought to participate in validation of the approach over the longer term, and feedback on the possibilities technology may offer in the future is welcomed.

19:30 - 21:00 - More time for discussion and socialization

Presenting

We are happy to host presentations of self-tracking projects of our members.  It's a great opportunity for you to actually take a look at your data, think about what it means, and generate a dialog around your self-tracking interests.  If you'd like to present, just send me an email ([masked]).  If you wish to make a computer presentation, we will have the capabilities to project it.  For guidance on presentations, please see: http://quantifiedself.com/2011/09/our-three-prime-questions/

Finding the room

You should enter the main building (HG) of ETH from the big double doors on the Rämistrasse side, or on the opposite side from the polyterasse. The room is on the G floor (2 floors up from the entrance). From Rämistrasse, as you face HG, it's on the right side of the building and on the Rämistrasse side. There are maps posted regularly within HG. Feel free to call me (Winslow) at [masked] if you need further assistance.

QS Sponsorship and Meetup Costs

We use the sponsor money and meetup donations to cover incidental venue costs, healthy refreshments, as well as to fund projects that help the larger QS community. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring Quantified Self, please let us know.

The first presentation was an insult to my intelligence.

Your top testimonial is over a decade old. The name and job title are out of date. This is scam, pure and simple: You left out the date deliberately to make it look better, too bad you forgot to delete it on your old website.

I realized that my presentation might not be appreciated by this group because it was subjective and not focused on hard data and not be as scientific as wanted. This was the first time I made this type of presentation.
Medication is most certainly a contentious issue today. Maybe it has become one of those subjects that you do not discuss at a dinner party. The main reason for me to get into bio/neurofeedback was because what the medication was doing to my son. My brother who was diagnosed with schizophrenia took medications most of his life ending up committing suicide. So I do have a vested interest. But, when my son was on medication I became very close minded and defensive. Someone asked me why a few days ago why.

Thanks for the clarification, it's good to see we agree on the nature of your presentation. I'm very sorry for your loss. A friend of mine took her life a year ago, partly caused by prescribed, but inept, drugs. It was excruciating, but it must be infinitely worse to lose your own child.

It was my brother not my son.

Recently I came across the following
    http://www.clintonfoundation.or...
Interesting on the same web site is
    http://www.clintonfoundation.or...
By the way, the name of the book I could not remember was
Anatomy of an Epidemic. Very well researched.
In conclusion, when I first got involved with Neurofeedback, I was extremely hopeful for the future as I saw biofeedback as a way of helping people to take their own lives into their hands and be self sustainable. It is not really new concept. The concept of self regulation as been practiced by Buddhists for thousands of years. These are tools that can speed up the process or make it a little easier but we still need to practice and train.

Well, I most certainly got some people’s attention. I am happy that there is discussion and there should be. I am happy when people, especially my clients, question me. In the past few years, many people have begun to question governments, religions, educational institutions and especially medical institutions. In my opinion, I believe that we can be thankful to the internet. People are better educated and want more.
