Coffee and Chat: fav topics in quantum physics

This is my first time as an organizer, and my first event. So, to break the ice, I'd love to hear what topics in quantum physics are currently most captivating to you.

[Note: this event was originally taking place January 13; to reserve a venue to accommodate our size, the event has been postponed until January 20. Apologies for any inconvenience.]

Couldn't make it this time, and glad to hear it was great discussion. I found this today a series of three lectures given by Hans Bethe (theoretical physicist) at age 93 and intended to explain quantum physics to an audience in a retirement home using limited mathematics while focusing on the personal and historical perspectives of his work on quantum theory. Anyway check it out, might be a good topic of discussion next time! http://bethe.cornell.edu

Professional welcome. People were encouraged to share their thoughts. The discussion wasn't as friendly as I'd hoped but good things take time. Glad there wasn't coffee there though.

What are we going to do? Is there anyone that is going to present anything?

    January 18, 2013

    • Robert E. D.

With 43 people, we can only hope some order will emerge spontaneously. (There will also be football fall-off.)

      January 18, 2013

    • Vanessa

Unfortunately, there is not a scheduled presentation. I never in my wildest dreams thought this group would have this turnout. I thought at best I could get 3 people for coffee. I'm thinking this Sunday we can break into smaller groups, and close with discussion on what we want from the group.

    Oh no!

The new date conflicts directly with the AFC Championship game (Patriots vs. Ravens). Next to the Superbowl, these championship games are a big deal for football fans.

    This is like Sophie's choice.

Wonderful I live one block away from there! Perfect.

    Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, the Sherman Oaks Galleria does not offer its community room for free, absent tax-exempt, non-profit status. The Yahoo Community Room is able to accommodate our event; however, no reasonable time slot was open for this upcoming Sunday.

As a result, I have made this decision to change the date. Apologies for any inconvenience.

This new date/time is Sunday, January 20, from 4-6 pm, at the Yahoo Community Room in Santa Monica.

Hey all. Thanks for the input! My top choice is the Sherman Oaks Galleria, followed by the library/community center in Santa Monica. Tomorrow I'll cross my fingers and call Shoaks...and if that proves fruitless, I will cross my fingers again and call the options in SaMo. Thanks for your patience as we navigate the complications of having such a popular group ;)

Vanessa is in Sherman Oaks, I believe. The founding location shows where she is. One should expect the organizer to pick a location convenient to her, which for her is anywhere in the Valley here (I am in SFV, too). I intentionally select meetups to join based on proximity. If there is a big demand well east, or south, or in WLA or WeHo, another member can suggest their own meetup as part of this group out the direction of choice with a location in mind.
People near are more likely to attend, people far are not, unless comments are fantastic and compelling to attend.

    My two cents.

keep in mind that half of the people often do not show up

    Hi everyone,

At this point, our group is super huge...so I'm not sure it's possible to count on a coffee house. Sunday also might be chilly, so I'm hesitant to find an outdoor location (I was originally thinking outdoor seating at the Sherman Oaks Galleria or a park would be nice).

I know the Santa Monica library has a conference room...but I'm not sure of the details, and libraries are closed on Sundays. This means we would also have to switch the day to Saturday.

I will call around various libraries on Monday when they are open. Again, a library location means we would switch to Saturday. Please let me know if you have any other ideas for a venue to seat 30+ people.

Some L.A. City libraries have a large room available. I know the Granada Hills Branch does. In this cold weather, parking my be available with the park adjacent too cold to be outside.

I checked at the chatsworth library which holds 70 people. You can try to reserve it on the lapl wensite. Scratch Encino for theater seating And woodland hills bc of a 3 month reserve (through the city attourney).

I'm dissapointed, can't to the valley, got a meetup in SM. I hope your group succeeds and I can make next time.

I pretty sure the Santa Monica Philosophy Meetup ( a wonderful group) is meeting that same day- so looks like I won't be able to make it. Sorry.

Thrilled with all of the enthusiasm! This weekend, I will tally the preferences expressed via comment, consider the location of RSVPed observers, and look into available community center spaces (since we have a small crowd at this point). Weighing all of this factors together, I will announce a location this weekend. In the meantime, please update your RSVP status if you no longer wish to attend, so that we can make the best choice possible for our actual group size. Thanks!

I'm hoping this will be some place in SFV.

We ought to be some place where there isn't a lot of ambient noise. Maybe a there is a community center or library that has a meeting room we can use, but maybe the first venue should to large to assess the normal turnout.

    I'm in the West SFV.

In SaMo I have been to Urban Cafe who provide a cozy room for 12+ and the SFV has several choices near 101/405.

Let's keep the location TBD as we gauge additional interest and location preferences.

Well, Higgs Boson (of course) ;-) I confess I haven't read much in the past year due to busy work and personal life, but I'd love to have friends that I can have discussions with and would inspire me to re-engage the quantum world. Perhaps one of my alternate selves (yes, I'm a proponent of the many worlds theory) has already had this experience (or another), so I'm hoping to catch up!
