What: The Mysterious Properties of Black Holes

Due to our remit to cover topics in Cosmology and Astrophysics as well as in Quantum Mechanics, the next talk will cover those amazing stellar objects - black holes. These unusual and amazing regions of space, created from the collapse of stars several times the size of our Sun and beyond, are so dense that their gravity stops even light from escaping.

These offer great points of discussion for theoretical physicists. It is theoretically possible for example (in the case of spinning and charged black holes) to pass through them and (supposing we somehow survive the trip) appear in another space and time. Some black holes orbiting with "normal" stars, pull off gas and create enormous bursts of gas, particles and X-rays that can be seen from Earth. Supermassive black holes are thought to exist in the centre of our Galaxy and nearly all others, and this can cause incredible effects such as high energies and brightness (i.e. quasars) and jets of gas and particles extending far beyond the galaxy itself (i.e. M87).

These objects are among the strangest and most compelling objects in our universe, and this talk and discussion is one not to be missed!
