I found today an interesting, short animation created by the staff at the Large Hadron Collider (the huge underground particle accelerator underneath Geneva), describing the Higgs field, a proposed field that permeates through all space and would act on all non-massless particles to provide them with the property of mass. A major aim of the Large Hadron Collider is to detect the particle associated with this field, the Higgs Boson, often referred to as the "God" particle.
The video is aimed at the layman and quite interesting to watch -http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1128122
