Hadley Wickham's online R course self-study group

Time: 6.00 – 7.30 pm May 1st

Venue: Square Bar, 389 Pitt St, Sydney NSW

Hi guys, a new self-study group in SURF will be launched on May 1st. Following the success of the self-study group - ‘Elements of Statistics Learning’ which started last year, this year we are having a self-study group to introduce ggplot2, plyr, reshape2 and stringr, which you may feel familiar if you came to Hadley Wickham’s presentation last October. If you missed Hadley's presentation last year, grab this opportunity to learn one of the brilliant ways R is applied to data analysis.

This group is open to beginners, introducing R programming, data processing and data visualisation, in particular ggplot2. At the current stage, we are aiming to go through 3 lectures each time, once each week, except the week when we have the SURF presentation. You need to cover the lectures in your own time beforehand, as this is a tutorial/help session. In the meeting Eugene and I will answer your questions and you can also share your learning experience with each other. The first three lectures that will be covered in the first meeting are:

1. Introduction R & ggplot2

2. Displaying distributions

3. Scatterplots and subsetting

If you cannot wait for it, click the following link and get started: http://stat405.had.co.nz/. Eugene and I look forward to seeing you there. Have a good long weekend.

Aileen was very helpful as she shared her knowledge on ggplot2 with people who attended the meeting last night. I believe this weekly meeting could be more productive if we complete the "homework"(provided at the end of each week's lecture note) and share our answers.

We could go two lessons as all of us got other commitments. It is good may be we should write our questions before the meeting.
