"Official" January 2014 Meetup

Note that the meetup date has changed!!!

6:30 Pizza,  Beer and networking
7:00 A word from our sponsor, O'Reilly/Strata and announcements
7:10 Nick Elprin: Domino
7:30 Earl Hubbell: torrentR

Nick Elprin Abstract
Domino allows data scientists to easily run R, Python and Matlab code in the cloud with automatic version control for data, code and results. I will give a demo of Domino, highlighting how it dramatically simplifies some common workflow challenges, including distribution of long-running calculations, and reproducibility of past work. Depending on audience interest, I will also describe how Domino is built, and describe our plans for future development.

Nick is a founder of Domino  Before starting Domino, he spent seven years designing and building analytics software at a large hedge fund. He studied computer science at Harvard.

Earl Hubbell will speak on torrentR
torrentR: Using R in a Next-Generation-Sequencing environment. Semiconductor sequencing uses direct detection of hydrogen ions from polymerase synthesis to detect sequence. This simple statement conceals interesting signal processing and inference challenges in turning voltage data from the chip into usable DNA bases. R is an open, extensible system with a strong visualization, analysis, and biological sequence manipulation ecosystem of packages. This allows for easy development and deployment of analysis tools with customization for our application suite. R is used in-house for monitoring, troubleshooting, and prototyping at all levels of the system. We have developed and deployed the “torrentR” package for handling semiconductor sequencing data. Challenges include custom data formats, large data volumes, interfacing with custom data processing pipelines – as well as competition from python.

About the presenter: Earl Hubbell is a Senior Engineering Leader at the Ion Torrent division of Life Technologies working on signal processing, base-calling, variant calling, and general system optimization for semiconductor sequencing
