Dip Netting for Salmon (and camping)

  • July 18, 2013 · 9:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Please look at the food list below for meals and ways you can help out.  Feel free to amend yourself into the list if I have not already put you down for something. The meals need to be flushed out so put in any snack items or side dishes (we need these). Also we will need fire wood.

This is a group event with some experienced in dip-netting and some who have never been. Dip-net season is July 10th - July 31, 6am -11pm each day. Some of us are going down Thursday night to fish both Friday and Saturday. A valid fishing licence and a dip-net permit (per household) is required. The limit is 25 salmon per permit holder plus 10 more salmon for every licensed member of the household (season, not day). For more information go to: http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=PersonalUsebyAreaSouthcentralkenaiSalmon.main

Fish will be cleaned on the beach! We will have a fish cleaning station set up, with a canopy.  Those not fishing may not help cleaning or handling gear. Please bring items to share for this: wet wipes, vacuum bags, toilet paper, water/water jugs and garbage bags (I will bring a wash sink too).

North side fishing on the beach with access from S. Spruce St. There is parking and camping available here (If we want too). On the beach, vehicles are allowed only on the west of the parking access.  So turn right, not left.

South side fishing on the beach with access from Kalifornsky Beach Road to Cannery Road to Dunes Road. Vehicles are allowed only between the high water mark and the dunes. Again, parking and camping is available with fees.

Those of you who just want to camp and enjoy (watch) are welcome.  But you will not be able to help with the fishing.  Depending on fire danger we may have a camp fire on the beach, so you could just sit and watch.

Sarah has offered up a camp site in a friend's back yard. No dogs will be allowed at this location. Showers will be available, bring your own towels. There is also a fire pit. More information on the camp site will follow.

The food/meal list has been started below.  Feel free to add yourself or items to the list.   (___) means this item needs to be assigned. We need some side dishes like dutch oven biscuits, potato salads, corn, breads, chips and dips.  If you have a dutch oven let me know (we will use it!).

Friday Breakfast: Eggs, Biscuits & Gravy, Fruit (Sarah)

Friday Lunch (beach): Hot dogs & Condiments (Sarah) Chips/snacks (Georgia-chips)

Friday Dinner: Dutch Oven Ribs & corn (Aurora) Risotto (Jonathon) Sides (___)

Saturday Breakfast: Pancakes, sausage, & crepes [maybe] (Georgia) Eggs (Sarah)

Saturday Lunch (Beach): Hot dogs & Pasta Salad (Denise) Condiments (Sarah) Chips/Snacks (Georgia-Chips)

Saturday Dinner: Chicken, Red Beans & Potatoes (Sarah) Sides (___), s'mores (Georgia)

Sunday Breakfast: Eggs & Bacon (Aurora) Muffins or pastry (___)

WE plan to have two younger people fishing for us but will be happy to gut, clean or anything for anyone. We have senior permits that allows for others to fish for us. BUT again we will do anything that needs to be done to support those that fish. We can clean and we can cook just say the word. Open fire, dutch oven or stove - trained in all three.

There are 3 meals we need to plan: Friday dinner, Saturday Breakfast and Saturday Dinner. Saturday lunch and Sunday breakfast can be left overs or munchies. Friday night is designated Hot Dog night. Denise, could you coordinate this please? Who would like to help her? Sarah has volunteered to do a main dish of chicken. I will help with that for Saturday night. Anyone want to volunteer for Saturday breakfast?

For those who have not signed up for a meal yet here is what we still need.
Breakfast items: Canned biscuits for dutch oven (I will make them if you bring them), muffins or bagels and toppings, bacon.
Lunch on the beach: Easy snack items like chips, pretzels, jerky, bottled water or juice boxes.
Dinner items: Bread & butter (again with the biscuits), sides like beans or salads, sweet things (s'mores, pie...)

If you have a dutch oven please bring it. I will use it!

Other things we will need: Trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, baby wipes, water (Jugs & Bottled), Hot Dog skewers and other skewers for the fire.

I have not confirmed yet because of Grandson's schedule .. here or lower 48. We have senior permits and licenses. We also have a very good dip net .. I mean very good. Questions - the tent place at friends .. 24 hour outhouse or bathroom there? We would have two tents. Comments seems to say those that do not have a license and a permit may not help clean, haul or carry gear? Under our senior permit someone can fish for us under our permit but I think they have to have a fishing license .. Our dip net can be used when we are not using it for permitted and licensed fishing people. It goes out into the water about 20 feet further than the little dip nets. (Completely legal design and size.)

I have a funny request...does anyone have a winter sled w/ a rope for pulling? I saw people put their fish in the sled & pulled it to where they filleted their salmon rather than trying to haul their fish in a pail or bucket. Kind of a genius idea...

Jonathan, could I borrow a haul sled?

      July 9, 2013

    • Georgia B.

Jonathon, I figure as the fish are caught, those who can't fish can use your sleds to haul the fish to the cleaning stations.

I will shop at costco for those who do not have time to run there. Aurora and I are leaving Thursday night to set up camp We will bring with us a trailer loaded with gear. Anyone who drops stuff off at my home prior to then will have the opportunity to have gear ferried there to campsite. Only necessary stuff will go to beach. We will have a four wheeler to use for bathroom runs and we are searching for a "potty" tent and bringa honey bucket. YOU will be emptying your own POO... bring bags, to put in main bag.
