The Eno River state park and associated trails are a great location for hiking in the Triangle area.
For this hike, we will combine the Cox Mountain Trail with the Fanny Ford trail for total distance of approximately 4.8 miles. This is a very scenic but moderately challenging trail: quite a few roots, rocks and uneven ground, so either hiking boots or sturdy footwear is advised. Please note that elevation (270 foot climb) on the Cox mountain part is fairly strenuous, therefore this hike is not recommended if you are severely out of shape. Pace will be moderate, 2.5-3.0 MPH. We will cross a suspension foot bridge (picture below) on the trail. Many people find the bridge interesting and fun, however the suspension design of this bridge means that it is not anchored underneath and it will rock a bit (OK, quite a bit) when you cross it. These full-disclosure warnings aside, the views of the river are outstanding and this is a beautiful place, so you may want to bring a camera and/or pack a lunch to enjoy the park and explore other trails on your own after the hike. Please dress appropriately for hiking and bring water if you would like to have it on the trail.
Driving and Parking directions:
We will be meeting at the Fews Ford (Access) Picnic area. Take Cole Mill Road until it dead ends at a circular packing lot with a picnic area and restrooms. We will meet at the entrance to the trails in the parking lot. There is additional parking at other locations in this part of the park if this lot fills. We will leave at 10:10 sharp, so please be on time. The hike will be around 2 hours.
From Interstate 85 exit 173, take Cole Mill Road northwest away from Durham. After five miles, Cole Mill Road will end at the park's Fews Ford Access.
From Interstate 85 exit 170, take Hwy. 70 west to Pleasant Green Road. Turn right and follow Pleasant Green 2.2 miles, then turn left on Cole Mill Road. After one mile, Cole Mill Road will enter the park's Fews Ford Access. Go all the way to the end of the road and it will end at the Few's Ford parking lot.
