Saturday hike at Lake Johnson Park, Raleigh

Let's get outdoors, hike some great trails and socialize at the same time.

The Saturday hiking series continues at Johnson Lake Park this week.  We will hike around Johnson Lake for approximately 5 miles, covering both the East (paved) and West (unpaved) loops.   The unpaved loop has quite a few roots, rocks and uneven ground, so either hiking boots or sturdy footware is advised.   Please dress appropriately for hiking and bring water if you would like to have it on the trail.

Driving and Parking directions:

Parking can be challenging at Lake Johnson.  We’ll meet at the parking lot that is off Lake Dam road(1232 Lake Dam Rd).  It is usually less crowded than the lot near the boat house.  An alternative plan is to park at Athens Drive High School, which is about a 1/2 mile walk from the parking lot.  Car pooling is encouraged!  There are restrooms and water at the boathouse.

We will leave at 10:10 sharp, so please be on time.  The hike will run approximately 2 hours.

Sorry I missed the group today. My daughter and I hiked around the Lake Johnson around noon. I enjoy the unpaved paths the best. Looking forward to the next event.

Weather forecast for tomorrow is excellent: sunshine and warm temperatures in the mid 80s. Should be an excellent day for hiking. Please give yourself a little extra time for parking. Parking at Lake Johnson can be challenging, especially when the weather is nice. There are a few options if the lot fills, probably the best is Athens Drive High school which is a 10-15 minute walk from the Lake Dam Rd. parking lot which is where we are meeting. School address is 1420 Athens Drive.

We are meeting at 10:00 at the Lake Dam Rd. Parking lot. Please see the top part of the event posting for a map and the time that the event starts. I've also included some driving directions to the parking lot.

    Can I bring +2?

Hi Scott. Thanks for asking. Unfortunately, we have to limit group size for many of the hikes, including this one, due to park regulations and parking lot capacity. Since there are still 4 people on the wait list, I have to request that unless the wait list clears and there are extra spaces, that we can't accommodate extra guests. If you and your friends prefer to do the hike on your own, I am glad to describe the route for you.

Kevin, We appreciate you volunteering but we really need you to attend a few events before you start leading the group.. maybe in a month or so

We could really use another hiking asst organizer. We can easily set up a second 30 person section of this hike if we could have someone to volunteer to be the leader of this section.

I'd like to hike only the paved trail. Will that create a problem?

    September 16, 2012

    • Mike

Jeanne - The only problem is that I don't know if there will be others in the group that want to limit the hike to the paved loop. We will be hiking around the perimeter of the lake. From the parking lot, it is about a mile to the boathouse where the group that is going on the full hike will cross the road for the unpaved part of the trail. You can continue around the paved loop to return back to the parking lot. The paved loop is 2.8 miles around, the unpaved part adds another 1.6 miles. The paved part tends to have many people out walking or walking dogs.

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
