Saturday 5 Mile hike in Durham - Eno River State Park

The Eno River state park and associated trails are a great location for hiking in the Triangle area.

For this hike, we will combine the Cox Mountain Trail with the Fanny Ford trail for total distance of approximately 4.8 miles. This is a very scenic but moderately challenging trail: quite a few roots, rocks and uneven ground, so either hiking boots or sturdy footwear is advised. Please note that elevation (270 foot climb) on the Cox mountain part is fairly strenuous, therefore this hike is not recommended if you are severely out of shape. Pace will be moderate,[masked] MPH. We will cross a suspension foot bridge (picture below) on the trail. Many people find the bridge interesting and fun, however the suspension design of this bridge means that it is not anchored underneath and it will rock a bit (OK, quite a bit) when you cross it.  These full-disclosure warnings aside, the views of the river are outstanding and this is a beautiful place, so you may want to bring a camera and/or pack a lunch to enjoy the park and explore other trails on your own after the hike. Please dress appropriately for hiking and bring water if you would like to have it on the trail.

Driving and Parking directions:
We will be meeting at the Fews Ford (Access) Picnic area. Take Cole Mill Road until it dead ends at a circular packing lot with a picnic area and restrooms. We will meet at the entrance to the trails in the parking lot. There is additional parking at other locations in this part of the park if this lot fills. We will leave at 10:10 sharp, so please be on time. The hike will be around 2 hours.

From Interstate 85 exit 173, take Cole Mill Road northwest away from Durham. After five miles, Cole Mill Road will end at the park's Fews Ford Access.

OR

From Interstate 85 exit 170, take Hwy. 70 west to Pleasant Green Road. Turn right and follow Pleasant Green 2.2 miles, then turn left on Cole Mill Road. After one mile, Cole Mill Road will enter the park's Fews Ford Access. Go all the way to the end of the road and it will end at the Few's Ford parking lot.

I changed my RSVP to No yesterday and for some reason it didn't register, as it still said yes this morning. So sorry. I'll try to change it again. Have fun.

For those looking to do something else, there is a volunteer event this morning at the Green Chair Project. This is a great organization. They work with Red Cross, Interact, etc. and help folks get re-started after loosing everything they own secondary to something like a fire in their home or escaping domestic violence.

I'm with Tres...hate to miss it yet wet and cold together aren't very enjoyable

Believe I am going to pass on this one as well.

I was really looking forward to this one, but I think I'm also passing. I don't mind cold so much or wet so much, but cold and wet together are not a recipe for an enjoyable experience.

I have decided to skip this one... Getting over a cold , hiking in the rain/snow probably won't help:)

I just checked the noaa.gov radar/forecast site for immediate info and see a cold rain headed our way. Normally I might give it a go anyway, but I'm not familiar at all with Eno's trails. I probably will forego this one today, but will look fwd for another planned hike here, soon. :-)

I have decide against coming to the hike, due to the weather forecast of snow and rain, with more mud. Hopefully, I will get to do this hike in the future during less inclement weather.

ok i'm going to borrow a friend's raincoat and plan to be there :) does anyone have a phone number i can call if i can't find everybody at the picnic area? thanks.

Hey all, Vinnie and I hiked the trail today and there were some muddy spots. So if it does rain tomorrow there will likely be more mud, so don’t wear those shiny new shoes. The hike is still on for tomorrow, rain or shine. I do plan to bring a raincoat, as the current forecast for tomorrow does call for scattered showers. Since this hike does seem to be popular we will be posting it again for mid-March. But there is no guarantee that the weather will be any better.

i was super excited about this but the weather forecast is looking ominous. what happens if it rains/snows?

    February 14, 2013

  • Debbie

I am hoping that the weather forecast I saw for Sat. predicting snow and rain changes. It is only Tues. and I am hoping that they are off by at least a day.

I would have loved to do this challenging hike but I will be out of town this Saturday... can we do it again in the following weekends? Some mountain climbing makes the hike more fun and interesting

    February 12, 2013

  • Diane

Would have loved to do this one!.Will definitely do next one.

    February 12, 2013

  • Tres

Sounds like a great place! Are well-behaved dogs OK on this hike or is this a people-only outing?

    February 10, 2013

    • Brian C.

      Tres,
It isn’t the norm for people to bring their pets on these hikes, but on rare occasions I have seen people bring their pets along and it hasn’t been a problem. I particularly don’t have a problem with it, but I can’t speak for everyone going. I also don’t want this to become an open invite for everyone to bring their pet along on the hike. Normally the hikes are more for people to socialize and pets may distract from that.
I do want to note that the suspension bridge at Eno may scare your pet. If you do decide to bring your pet please make sure that it is on a leash.
      Thanks
