Sandhill Cranes Shoot

Hello all,

So sorry for the delay, I've gotten a LOT of information from my contact, and I kind of had to figure it all out.

Here is the deal:

The parking lot at the Phillis Haehnle Audubon Sanctuary is VERY small, and it is about an hour away, so I suggest you all meet before and drive together.

MEETING PLACE 2:30 PM

LA FITNESS at 696 and Woodward
25352 Woodward Ave.
Royal Oak, MI 48067
MEET ON THE SOUTH SIDE - the 696 Side

Remember - if you don't drive, and you ride with someone, offer gas money please.

As long as your organize and leave by about 3pm, you should all have plenty of time to get there

ARRIVE at the Phillis Haehnle Audubon Sanctuary around 4 pm:

9066 Seymour Rd  Pleasant Lake, MI 49272

This is ACTUALLY the house address for across the street, but it's the only address that the Sanctuary has - so once you find this address, the parking lot is right across the street.

There will be Greeters from the Jackson Audubon Society at the Sanctuary from 4 to about 7pm. They will be able to help you by letting you know where to go, and kind of how to get the best photo. The birds mostly come in around 6 - so you should have about 2 hours to find your spot - this is about the amount of time that they suggested to me that you needed.

Ok!

Now, after dinner, I've made reservations for 25 of you all at

Smokehouse 52 BBQ

125 S. Main Street Chelsea, Michigan 48118

This place has been recommended, and they apparently have amazing food, and "more than enough room" for our group.

FINALLY: Here is some information that they've sent me

Here's a map of the area you are going to MAP

Here is a Detailed Crane Count of the area  COUNT I called the Sanctuary this morning and they said they have about 385 as of 14th.

The Haehnle Sanctuary phone number[masked]

Ok, and finally - I will NOT be joining you for this outing, as I have other commitments. I am FAIRLY sure that Amy Olsen is taking the lead on this, but I will confirm with her today and let you know.

We will probably go again in mid to late november.. I guess as it gets colder there are more birds.

We did not see many birds today. Maybe 10 or so flew in. I did get a rainbow shot before it started to hail. We left after that so I guess we were there for about an hour and a half. We found a Ponderosa 5 miles away and ate there. I was disappointed with the number of cranes but the guide said the count is really down this year.

Ok, after conferring with Amy Claeys I have decided not to make the trip out to the sanctuary. The bird count is very low this week and no one cane to meet me at LA Fitness. I will watch the bird count and post a new date as the numbers increase. If you are still going to the sanctuary the address that I posted a little while ago is probably your best bet. Good luck, happy shooting and I'll re-post this meet-up soon.

I will be leaving the parking lot of LA fitness by 3 PM. If you would like to meet me at the sanctuary you are still welcome to do so. The sanctuary website lists the following address for GPS purposes:
8746 Seymour Rd, Grass Lake, MI 49259

I am at LA Fitness and I'm not seeing anyone else. If you are waiting for someone, I'm in the corner of the lot closest to the highway over by the big truck that has a promotional banner on it.

Weather is clearing up! Yeah. Like the weather I've changed my mind again and I will meet everyone at the sanctuary around 4 p.m.

The weather is supposed to be a little nicer tomorrow so I am going tomorrow instead.

I am leaving from Port Huron so I won't be at the LA Fitness. We will see you at the sanctuary parking lot.

Current crane count at the sanctuary remains low - lets hope for some cold weather so they start to flock up and congregate. It could be very good for this in late October or November?

This may have to be done again later in the year - we'll see.

As of nowI think I can make October 26 but not the next weekend. If the best time to see them is at sunset do we really want to meet at 7am? (not my best time of day.)

If it is out of state of Michigan event, I need to know the location and length of the trip. I require the info so that I can firmly reschedule work for this event. Also, If anyone has a part-time job available, I need the extra income to get the sensor cleaned on my camera or save cash for film and use my second body which is analogue aka film!

    April 24, 2013

    • Amy

Paul, Camera Mart will have a free sensor cleaning in the next month or so. Also, if you read the post, this is NOT an out of state event. This is in Chelsea Michigan. As for giving you a "heads up" that is what this post is, exactly a heads up.

      April 25, 2013

    • Paul W.

Great, on both items. Very happy about the Sandhill Cranes, I missed the part about Chelsea! Just stressing over the sensor, posting capture of the sensor on my personal FB page.

    All,

I have been going to the sanctuary for years and it is very exciting to see the flights come in right over your head. Last year was a record year and if it is not too wet (2011 was) I hope there will be a lot of cranes. Sunset is amazing with flight after flight of cranes arriving. I would also check on moon rise and phase, if you get lucky cranes in Moon makes for a terrific shot. I won't take up a spot as I may be out there anyway.

    April 23, 2013

  • Tim P.

Sounds exciting.. getting my bid in early
