Super Moon Photo Shoot

  • Jun 23, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Second Update:

Due to the fact that someone pointed out that the moon will rise behind Windsor (from Belle Isle's standpoint) I've thrown out that we head down to Corktown, and shoot the Super Moon from the vantage  in front of the Train Station.

I will be down there by 7. According to my research - the moon will rise at 9:22 pm. With the sun setting at 9:12 PM.

The train station is located at 2405 West Vernor in Detroit.

I am bringing my tripod for this, and my longest (and shortest) lenses.

I hope to see you there.

UPDATE:

This will happen at Belle Isle. I will be arriving around 7 pm with a chair, and probably a cooler with a light dinner - Please feel free to join me.

I'm going to head to the furthest point closest to the city - that area past the fountain and next to that big picnic area. It's  big open area, and should be nice for photos.

If you have a good link on "how to shoot the moon" please feel free to post it in the comments. I have never done this successfully - but in THEORY I know how to do it.

See you all there!

Amy

What do you think about heading to Belle Isle to shoot the Super Moon with the Detroit Skyline?

Would you rather do this in Windsor? We haven't done Windsor yet this year...this might be a great time for it.

Your thoughts would be appreciated in the comments :)

I was let down by my camera, so I could not get any good shots. I did end up learning alot, though.

Sorry, we won't be able to make it tonight after all. If things change (again), we'll call you and catch up with you -but probably not. Have fun shooting at the moon.

Does Belle Eisle closes at 10pm? Someone told me they put barriers and you can't get in and you have to leave. Does anyone know anything about that?

    June 22, 2013

    • Amy

Vessela, I'm fairly sure that Belle Isle is out because it's not going to be the best place to photograph the moon. We have Mich Ave in Corktown and the Train Station on the table. I am open to other suggestions about good locations

how about metro park it is open untill 11pm?

What do you guys think of heading to the train station instead? I was over there tonight, and the moon was gorgeous behind it.

      That sounds awesome!

Would down Michigan Ave in Corktown be a good place to catch the moon behind the Detroit Skyline? I know that you can get an unobstructed view of downtown from there. Plus, it will likely not be crowded.

Another more geometrically more advantageous shot would be along Grand River Ave. However, I do not know what is along that street or where we could safely set up.

FYI - Detroit Riverdays is going on this weekend in Detroit and Windsor Summer Fest also. So, the area will be crowded - including the 100+ photographers on Belle Isle!

Choir baby shower that I am helping set up and take down :( Another lost opportunity :( Do you know that the next blue moon is Aug 20-21 ? You guys fun

It appears to me that the moonrise will take place about 8:25 pm tomorrow bearing SE (119º), i.e. the moon will rise from Canada side. It will not be behind the Detroit skyline to capture from Belle Isle. Am I missing something?

    1 · June 22, 2013

You are not - but from what I see it should be in the sky - if you have a better place to shoot from I am all ears :)

I'm pretty sure the moon will be to the South East in the evening. Does anyone know any good locations North West of the city to get the moon behind the skyline?

    June 21, 2013

    • Amy

I wish I did. If you come up with one, we can go there instead.

Hey Amy, I do not know my ways around Belle Isle. How do I get a hold of you if I cannot find you?

Also, can you point on a Google map or something where to go? If someone (with a better sense of direction than me) wants to carpool from Royal Oak, please let me know.

http://www.meetup.com... Basically, when you get on the island, drive past the fountain, then right after that when the road just starts to curve, park. Then walk out to the open area right there. It is easier than it sounds I promise.

I shot the moon a few weeks ago, using these instructions, and it worked beautifully. This is from Oksana A's YouTube channel:

FOR TAKING PICTURES OF THE MOON YOU WILL NEED:
    1. Good timing
    2. Use a tripod
    3. Cable release is a good idea
    4. Use telephoto lens (200mm or longer)
    5. Use Sunny 16 Rule
    - start: ISO 100 F16 1/125 sec
    - if too dark try f11 of f8 (Some people call it Loony 11 or Loony 8 Rule)
    6. Use manual focus (try to focus in live view)
    7. Experiment with white balance
The above came from Oksana A. at Easy Exposure http://easy-exposure.com/

She's got video tutorials on several topics that I've used many times.

Just so you know, the Michigan Photo group from Livonia has a meetup shoot on Belle Isle for the Super Moon too.
I will be returning from a northern Canadian vacation, so cannot commit for sure, but wanted to mention it.
If I could commit, I 'd vote for Windsor. :-)

Michigan Photo Adventures is going too. They've got 80+ people signed up. (I see a few faces signed up for both)

This could end up to be a very neat shoot, if all show up there will be over 100 photographers all shooting in the same direction, "poparazzi moon shooters", I first witnessed this kind of event one daybreak on Sparks Lane in the Cades Cove TN earlier this year.
