Pre-ice show Plymouth, MI

  • Jan 9, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Thursday, Jan 9, 2014. As in years past, there will be ice carvers but probably no finished carvings. Let’s photograph the making of the carvings the night before the opening of the festival.

There will be fences around the artists, but plenty of room for us. Even though the carvings will not be fully completed, there are interesting shots. Bring tripods and dress warmly. Oh, and stay away from the chain saws! Remember that the public will also be walking in the area, so be careful with your tripod set-up.

We can warm up at Panera for hot chocolate afterward and Starbucks is right next door.
Meet at Panera Bread located at 400 South Main Street which is on the corner of Main St and Ann Arbor Trail in downtown Plymouth. It is kitty corner from Kellogg Park where the carvers are. Look for me in the outdoor sitting area. I will provide my cell number a few days prior.

Not as many carvers as in years past, but nice nevertheless. The falling snow added ambiance to the true winter scene this year.

For those who've not made it to the Plymouth Ice Festival before, it can truly be something to see. Some years, we experience a big thaw. Other years (like this is shaping up to be), it's a deep freeze.

In my youth, I worked for the Mayflower Hotel which was the driving (and originating) sponsor for the event. It was something to see from behind the scenes.

I've not done a night-time shoot of the ice before. That in and of itself should prove both interesting, and challenging.

Hello, JT. Good to know we have a native with us. We've done this pre-ice show Jan 2011 and Jan 2012 and have gotten lucky with frigid weather. You can get some great shots of the saws, frost and lights just to name a few. It looks like it will be very cold again this year. Hope to see you there.

I've RSVP'd Yes. Wish there were a 'tentative' option; need to resolve a conflict. :)
