Report from Ontology Summit 2013 on Ontology Evaluation

Would folks be interested in a report-back session from Ontology Summit 2013? Topic: "Ontology Evaluation across the Ontology Lifecycle" I'm just back from the Summit's Symposium finale at NIST. Disclaimer: I was on the Organizing Committee, so I'm not entirely unbiased. But I'm not selling anything or promoting any products. I think this year's output was particularly relevant to those using ontologies in real-world semantic technology applications, and I'd be happy to provide a summary, answer questions, point people towards resources the summit gathered, uncovered, or created that may be particularly relevant to their projects and interests. Please provide feedback if you would be interest in such a session.

Background: The Summit Communique can be found here: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2013_Communique, and info and proceedings for all summit sessions here: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2013

You may be interested in a project we are just getting underway regarding the development of a common language for the environmental health sciences in collaboration with the US EPA. To support this work we released of an RFI for “Input on Development of a Language Standard for Environmental Health Sciences”. Please share this opportunity for input with your colleagues. The RFI is number NOT-ES-14- on the NIH Guide (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-ES-14-004.html ).

Follow up to mention in discussion of the Code for Durham group, which many folks didn't know about. There is a meeting tonight (11 March): http://www.meetup.com/Triangle-Code-for-America/events/169649722/?a=ea1_evn&rv=ea1&_af_eid=169649722&_af=event
(it's a subgroup of Triangle Code for America; hence that URL). FYI.

As I mentioned during the meeting, NIH is interested in several of these topics under the BD2K initiative. Request for Information (RFI) notices are out as well as grant opportunities.

Hi, Is this event confirmed for tomorrow. Thanks.

      I believe so.

yep, we should be good to go.

I'll leave it to whoever is offering to give the talk. I know we can get the space at SplatSpace as long as there are no schedule conflicts, but I'm open to whatever. But if we don't do this there on the 26th, I think I'm going to setup a "Intro to the Semantic Web" or some other topic, and run that at Splat on Feb 26th.. that, of course, would in no way prevent us from doing a meeting on this topic as well. Who was it that attended the Ontology Summit and was offering to do the talk?

That would be me, Phillip! I'm still willing to do it, and Feb 26 would be fine, but would also be happy to join the group for another topic on that date.

Let's go for that then. I have a couple of intro level talks I could give, but I don't want to be the only one speaking all the time (although to be fair, we haven't met in, like, forever). I don't want anybody looking at this as being a "Phil Rhodes Cult of Personality". :-)

While we're speaking of Ontology Summits, folks here might be interested in participating in the 2014 round, which starts tomorrow (16 Jan). This year's topic is "Big Data and Semantic Web Meet Applied Ontology." 99% of the Summit sessions and other activities occur virtually, making it a great opportunity to mix with and learn from colleagues far and wide. Here's the Wiki landing page for the 2014 Ontology Summit overall: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2014. Info for the launch event is in the first item under "What's New" or direct at: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2014_01_16

If many folks in this group participate, perhaps one or more informal gatherings, discussing things brought up in the summit sessions, would be of interest, too.

Excellent. I'll see if I can listen in for at least a few sessions here and there. Thanks for the heads-up.

Actually, this might be a great TriHUG topic (which could then be held at BrontoSW at ACT). Otherwise, WestEnd Wine Bar or upstairs at Starbucks might work.

Gang: How about February 26th at SplatSpace in Durham? I want to get this group going again, and had tentatively planned an "Introduction to the Semantic Web" meeting for that evening, but we could use that night for this instead. That is, assuming there are no conflicts for using their space that night. I'm checking on that point now...

Has this event taken place somewhere? If not, how about Lime at the new 140 West Franklin in Chapel Hill?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
