As on any ride you go on, but esp. on the dragon:

Ride your own ride and stay on your side of the double yellow.

Considering this trip...will know more tomorrow. IMHO after about 12 trips to the Dragon - the real attraction are the other roads like 28 down to Highlands, Wayah Road coming back, 318 out to Two Wheels Only (great lunch stop) and of course the Cherohala Skyway. Watch the speeds, they have been known to use helicopters. A map from WWW.MADMAPS.COM is a must, they lay out great loops for 300 - 400 mile twisty days. You can also buy the map at the gas station at the south end of the Dragon.

I did this trip last year and it was hotter than you know what. I stayed in Gatlinburg at the St. James Hotel (very nice and had parking for my trailer). You have to check out Gatlinburg - there is alot to do there. Other than Pidgeon Forge and Gatlinburg there is not much other than great roads. The Dragon is mostly cutbacks and going uphill is great (especially on a Ducati or ant bike with low end torque). You never really go over 25-30mph on the Dragon unless you want to die or get a ticket

I cannot afford time off from work until September, and am already planning a trip down there at that time

Motels might be full closer you are to the dragon. Rally scheduled for the 16th so people more than likely coming that weekend.

Hrmm... kind of a lightning run, the gap will be full of cops, squids, and terrified cruiser riders who don't know what curves are. Still, this could be pretty fun.
